Nemo Road is a quiet community with access to the Black Hills
Surrounded by the woods and slopes of the Black Hills, Nemo Road is a neighborhood on Rapid City's western outskirts. The area is set apart with access to greenery that isn't available further east in the city. "There's a lot more evergreen coverage on that side of town," says Michael Frybarger, a broker with Ascend Realty. "East Rapid City is more about the prairie, but you see old-growth trees out west." Known for natural beauty and privacy, this quiet community attracts potential homeowners looking for easy access to outdoor recreation and upscale housing with larger lots. Nemo Road has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. Retirees are a significant portion of the population, drawn in from all over the country. "We get a lot of transplants looking to start over," says Kristen Andrews-Lowe, a Realtor at Re/Max Advantage. "They come from as far as California because their money goes further here."
Homes typically have more square footage and larger lots
Traditional subdivisions are few and far between, with most houses spread out on winding roads through the Black Hills. Lots frequently have at least one acre, with many featuring wooded backyards or peak views. Most homes were built in the late 20th century and often feature rustic or cabin-style accents like log siding. The average home is just under 3,000 square feet, about 1,000 more than the national average. Ranch-style and New Traditional are typical of the area, often selling between the $350,000s and $600,000.
Stevens High School's athletics make it to the championships
Students in the area can attend Pinedale Elementary School, which has a B-plus from Niche, before enrolling at West Middle School, which has a B-minus. From there, they'll head to Stevens High School, which has a B-plus. The high school's varsity baseball team made it to the state championship in 2025, while the girl's soccer team made it to the state championship in 2024.
The area has many options for hiking and camping
The surrounding peaks and forests of the Black Hills are filled with trails, campsites and overlooks – popular spots for hikers and camping enthusiasts. Buzzards Roost has 10 miles of trails that also accommodate mountain biking, while Pactola Reservoir has sites for tent and RV camping. The Black Hills Caverns reach over 100 feet into caves filled with ancient limestone formations. History buffs can visit the Mount Rushmore National Monument or the Crazy Horse Memorial, both roughly 30 miles south.
Locals head further into town for groceries and retail
With few shopping centers in the area, most Nemo Road residents head deeper into the city for groceries and other necessities. Baken Park is a popular destination due to its boutique shops, while the Uptown Rapid Mall has about 80 retail options and chain restaurants. The Family Fare Supermarket and Dakota Seafood are available on the west side of Rapid City. Opened in 2011, Ron's Café is a classic greasy spoon diner with daily specials for breakfast and lunch. The Millstone Family Restaurant is a local chain known for its big menu and "South Dakota-sized" portions.
The Monument hosts live shows and sporting events
The Monument is the area's leading event venue for traveling performers and local events. It also hosts the Rapid City Rush, the area's hockey team. The Black Hills Pow Wow has celebrated the culture of different Native American tribes for decades, holding dance competitions and traditional performances.
Downtown Rapid City is 12 miles away
The road that shares a name with the neighborhood follows Boxelder Creek through the Black Hills, passing through several ghost towns and acres of vegetation on the way to Brownsville. State Route 44 leads to Downtown Rapid City, roughly 12 miles away. The Monument Health Rapid City Hospital offers emergency services and general healthcare.
Nearby tourist attracts can make the streets busy
Tourism plays a significant role in Rapid City's economy. Nemo Road is a primary route to attractions such as Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial, often leading to increased street traffic and congestion in local restaurants and shops.
According to First Street, Rapid City is at a severe risk for wildfires due to wind levels and dry heat.
