. Many are drawn north for lower-than-average real estate prices compared to the city at large, which comes from the community's humble roots. "Decades ago, it was where a lot of federal housing was for people coming off the reservation, and I think that historical complexity earmarked a lot of opinions about the area," says Katy Kinnan, global director of Fountain Springs Church. "But there's been a boom of building and all kinds of housing, and the community has become more of a melting pot." Today, steady growth has brought shopping, entertainment and public parks to the area.
Development is planned for new houses and subdivisions
Residential areas are concentrated in the neighborhood's southeastern corner, with businesses, farms and open prairie filling everywhere else. Homes are arranged in a grid pattern with sidewalks that often connect to commercial zones, providing a level of walkability. Lawns are minimal, with lots only occasionally reaching a quarter of an acre. Backyards usually end with alleys that give room for a single-car garage or shed. With a median construction date of 1958, midcentury homes are prevalent, with split-level and ranch-style houses selling for around $190,000 to $320,000, based on size and amenities. Early 20th-century Cape Cods and bungalows are also available and tend to be priced between $110,000 and $230,000, depending on condition and the amount of renovation. Development for homes and subdivisions has been approved closer to the
area. Mayor Jason Salamun says it's just the beginning. "A lot of the growth that Rapid City is experiencing is going to be up north," he says.
Central High School's esports team made it to the championships
Students can begin at Horace Mann Elementary School before heading to North Middle School, both of which have a C from Niche. From there, they'll enroll at Central High School, which has a B-minus. In 2025, four of the high school's esports teams advanced to the championships during the State Esports Tournament. The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology enrolls about 2,500 students annually. Established in 1885, the school is known for its engineering programs, which are consistently named the top in the state by the U.S. News and World Report.
Playgrounds, community gardens and history museums are nearby
Several neighborhood parks dot the landscape, including College Park and Vickie Powers Memorial Park, which have playground areas, picnic pavilions and charcoal grills. The LaCroix Community Garden has dozens of in-ground and raised bed plots available for rent on a season-to-season basis. Opened in 1997, the Journey Museum offers visitors a look at the history of the Black Hills, including exhibits on dinosaurs, the Native American Sioux tribe and 19th-century pioneers.
The neighborhood has several shopping and restaurant options
Chain restaurants and retail tend to center around Haines Avenue and Interstate 90, including franchises like Kohl's, Walmart and Best Buy. The Uptown Rapid Mall has over 80 stores and eateries and an AMC movie theater. The Millstone Family Restaurant has been a local staple since 1981. Known for big portions and a cozy atmosphere, it serves laid-back homestyle food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Beau's Cambell Street Diner is a classic greasy spoon with no-frills menu items like smash burgers, pancakes and country-fried steak.
Annual shows bring performances, and historic sites bring tourists
The Monument is the city's primary entertainment venue, hosting live performances, local hockey matches and annual events like the Black Hills Pow Wow. At the beginning of each year, the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo invites visitors from all over the region for a two-day event. Featuring bull riding, sheepdog exhibits and livestock sales, it's the second-largest event in South Dakota.
With nearby sites and events like Mount Rushmore and the
Motorcycle Rally, tourism is a top industry in Rapid City. Visit Rapid City reports that nearly 4 million tourists vacationed in the Black Hills area in 2024, which can cause traffic issues and general congestion.
Interstates 90 and 190 are close
Interstates 90 and 190 are the area's main highways, the latter leading directly into downtown Rapid City. Interstate 90 leads to Sturgis, about 30 miles northwest, and
