A gateway to the prairie
As the mountainous landscape of the Black Hills smoothes into grasslands, the Northeast Rapid City region acts as a gateway to the flatter terrain South Dakota is better known for. "The further east you go, the more you're getting into the prairie," says Michael Frybarger, lifelong Rapid City resident and owner of Ascend Realty. "Lower ground and fewer trees." With more room and less rocky terrain, most of the city's growth occurs in areas like this, spurred on by an expanding job market in places like the Ellsworth Air Force Base and Monument Health. Convenient access to downtown Rapid City and a desire for seclusion have also influenced a steady uptick in residents.

Recent construction in the farmland
Long roads cut through the area's vast stretches of farmland and pastures, with butterweed flowers and bales of hay breaking up the landscape. Silos and outbuildings sit on gravel roads, accompanied by the occasional farmhouse or doublewide. The area has a secluded frontiersman fee — something many residents specifically moved for. "People come out here looking for a little more room," says Frybarger. "They want to live somewhere that isn't so densely populated."
Most single-family homes were constructed in the early 21st century and cluster along the border they share with North Rapid City . "The area's still pretty new to development," says Amy Hook, a Realtor with ReMax Advantage. "It's spent a long time as open farmland." Midcentury-inspired split-levels and ranchers are popular, along with sleek contemporary Craftsmen. Prices range between the low $300,000s and the low $400,000s as square footage increases.

A Rapid City institution since the 1930s, Tally's Silver Spoon combines elements of fine dining with a greasy spoon attitude for dishes like duck confit, tempura shrimp and foie gras. Their "Indecision Menu" takes the trouble of choosing out of the visitor's hands, letting the chef create a custom tasting menu. Firehouse Brewing is South Dakota's oldest operating brewery and wears that fact like a badge of honor, churning out award-winning IPAs, stouts and lagers.
