Sheridan Lake Road is a scenic area connected to Rapid City

In West Rapid City, Sheridan Lake Road is in a convenient location close to outdoor amenities, schools and shopping. Proximity to major thoroughfares keeps Sheridan Lake Road connected to the city and surrounding neighborhoods. Jill VantHul, a resident of the area and a Realtor with Black Hills Realty, says it’s a very desirable part of town. "This area offers an ‘in the hills’ vibe, while only minutes from downtown, or all of the Black Hills attractions in the other direction,” she says. Some properties have views of the hills, and others are across from parks and golf courses.

Bi-levels and ranch-style homes are common in the neighborhood

“There are a variety of housing styles and pricing options in this area, with a mix of older and new-construction homes that are well-suited for all types and ages of homeowners,” VantHul says. Bi-levels, split-levels, raised ranch-style and ranch-style homes are all common in the area. Most homes built in the 1960s through the ‘90s sell around the $290,000 to $500,000 price range. The majority of homes built in the 21st century start at about $520,000 and go up to $1.4 million. Homes average over 2,600 square feet, and the median lot size is a quarter of an acre. Some sections of the neighborhood may have a homeowners’ association with monthly fees.

Neighborhood schools have B ratings and academy programs

Most students in the neighborhood can attend Meadowbrook Elementary, although some homes in the lower portion of the area may be zoned for Corral Drive Elementary. Both schools have a B rating from Niche. Southwest Middle has a B-plus grade, while Stevens High is rated B. Rapid City Area Schools offers different academy programs for high schoolers, including the Academy of STEM and the Academy of Advanced Technology.

“The schools in this area are among the higher-rated schools in Rapid City, which makes them desirable for parents with school-aged children,” VantHul says. “My two children attended school in this district and had a very positive experience.” School choice in the district includes magnet programs, intra-district transfers and statewide open enrollment, depending on available space.

Parks, trails and golf courses surround Sheridan Lake Road

The area is close to many green spaces, including Canyon Lake Park. It offers a bridge for fishing and paddle boat rentals. Sioux Park has sports courts, fields and a playground. Storybook Island is a summer attraction with literature-themed interactive exhibits, and Jackson Park has a disc golf course. Traditional golfers have the choice between the public Meadowbrook Golf Course and the private Arrowhead Country Club. In the direction of the hills, Sheridan Lake Road leads to Spring Creek and Trail, Dakota Point Trailhead and Sheridan Lake and Campground. Rapid Creek runs through the upper section of the area, providing many fishing opportunities.

Local shops and eateries offer convenience and variety

Residents have a few different choices for shopping and dining. “I shop at Rushmore Crossing for most of my basic needs and love to shop downtown Rapid City to support local businesses,” VantHul says. “For unique finds, I love shopping in Hill City, which is just a short drive down Sheridan Lake Road.” Thirsty’s Burgers & Beer and Sumo Japanese Kitchen are two eateries in downtown Rapid City. Family Fare and Safeway are nearby grocery stores.

Highway 44 connects residents to the regional airport

Residents will primarily need a car to navigate the area. The Borglum Route of the Rapid Transit System goes to Cayon Lake Park. Sheridan Lake Road begins in Rapid City and goes for about 18 miles to U.S. Highway 385 at Sheridan Lake. The drive to Rapid City Regional Airport is around 15 miles on South Dakota Highway 44 East. The neighborhood has a severe wildfire risk, according to First Street.
