West Rapid City
Foliage outside the Black Hills
West Rapid City takes full advantage of its space, filling every lot or cul-de-sac with dwellings or businesses. The result is one of the busier sections of the city, with locals from all over visiting for errands and entertainment. Residential zones are filled with trees and other foliage, adding to the desirability and overall price of the neighborhood. “People go further west to live in the trees and hills, and it gets more expensive,” says Seth Malott, Rapid City native and owner of Century 21 Clearview Realty. “We call it the Acorn Tax.” The most common architectural styles are ranch-style, split-level, Cape Cod and bungalows. Prices start in the mid-$100,000s for smaller homes and those needing renovation before rising into the mid-$300,000s as the houses get larger and closer to schools and parks. The homes with the highest square footage and the largest lots peak in the high $600,000s.The flower-filled beds of Sioux Park
Established in 1936, Dinosaur Park gets its name from the cartoonishly painted concrete dinosaurs that dot its hilly terrain. Set at the top of a peak off Skyline Drive, the park offers a panoramic view of the city, along with the Black Hills to the west and the prairie to the east. Recent renovations have made the park fully handicap-accessible with a series of ramps and walkways featuring simulated dinosaur tracks to the top. Set against the eastern shore of Rapid Creek, Jackson Park is a popular site for athletes of all ages, with 13 baseball and softball fields and an 18-hole disc golf course. At 210 acres, Sioux Park is the city’s largest and has a football field, a public pool with a waterslide and miles of trails for hikers and bikers alike. Carefully manicured flower gardens fill the landscape with color during the warmer months. In the forested peaks of the Black Hills, locals will find a wide range of camping and boating options along dozens of scattered lakes and creeks. The highest ranges are popular spots for skiing and snowboarding in the winter.Athletics at Stevens High
Students begin their education at Pinedale Elementary School, which scores a B-plus with Niche, before enrolling at West Middle School, which has a B-minus. Older students attend Stevens High School, which has a B-plus and a prolific athletics department that includes football, soccer, wrestling and hockey.Boutique shopping at Baken Park
Piesano’s Pacchia has been a Rapid City institution since it was opened in 1993, featuring Italian classics and gourmet pizzas on checkered tablecloths. Locals can buy unbaked pizzas or even just the pizza dough for their own culinary creations. Baken Park hosts storefronts and retail options that include wine, baby clothes and supplies and specialty clothing stores. “It’s one of the best places in town to go shopping,” says Andrews-Lowe. “They have some of the best little boutique stores around.”Live music at Summer Nights
Rapid City Summer Nights is a yearly concert series that has been a hit with locals since 2007. Every Thursday in the summer, the downtown area transforms into a lively block party featuring live music, food trucks from nearby restaurants and fun activities for the whole family.Easy access to Monument Health
Though limited public transportation is offered through the Rapid City Rapid Ride on weekdays during work hours, most residents will require a vehicle for any trip beyond the immediate city limits. Highways 44 and 231 border the neighborhood and provide convenient access to downtown and the Monument Health Rapid City Hospital. The Rapid City Regional Airport is 12 miles southeast for trips further afield.Important to know
