Exploring Kanaskat’s rural landscape and peaceful lifestyle

The sound of rushing water from the Green River is heard throughout Kanaskat, a deeply rural area about 6 miles southeast of Ravensdale and roughly 11 miles north of Enumclaw. Residential properties are dotted throughout the neighborhood’s thick forests. “People interested in the rural lifestyle like to come live out here. There’s no traffic and a lot of privacy, so as long as they’re willing to make a commute to where they work it’s pretty great,” says Real Estate Agent Elizabeth Waloweek with Better Properties Kent, who has about 20 years of experience. The surrounding landscape is flush with natural recreation for those who enjoy hiking and whitewater rafting.

Single-family homes with acres of land

Most homes in Kanaskat are found along narrow country roads, come with acres of land and are surrounded by tall trees. “There’s not a lot of housing out here, in terms of new development. They’re all older,” Waloweek says. Ranch-style homes and raised ranchers built between the 1930s and 1990s are common, some with vinyl exteriors and others with a cabin-inspired design. These houses span 1,400 to 2,700 square feet and cost $500,000 to $825,000. Traditional single-story and manufactured homes are smaller and can get as low as $450,000.

Other housing options for the area include split-levels and traditional multi-story homes built between the 1920s and 1970s. Prices range from $550,000 to $950,000. Craftsman-inspired farmhouses with front porches, pointed roofs and multiple front gables tend to come with acreage. Some homeowners will use the property as a working farm with chicken and livestock. These homes span 3,200 to 3,800 square feet and cost $1.2 million to $1.5 million.
