Prince Gallitzin State Park is at the heart of Reade Township
Once a mining town, Reade Township, 18 miles from Altoona, Pennsylvania, is now a rural haven next to Prince Gallitzin State Park. “It’s a neat community because of the park,” says Wally Rossi, a Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Town & Country. “It’s a wooded area, but there are farm areas, and a lot of it is mountainous.” Prince Gallitzin draws both seasonal and permanent residents. “The lake is a big draw,” says Jessica Lavelua, park manager of Prince Gallitzin State Park, about Glendale Lake. “It’s a big lake with lots of scenic views. People come here to camp by the lake or have picnics and fish.” The park is the heart of the area, offering events for locals and visitors alike. The green space has ample opportunities for boating and fishing, popular pastimes in the region.

Ice Fishing at Prince Gallitzin State Park
“Prince Gallitzin is the third most visited state park in Pennsylvania,” says Lavelua. “We have almost 2 million visitors a year.” The park offers over 32 miles of trails where hikers may experience local wildlife and lake views. Crooked Run Campground is open from the beginning of April through the beginning of October, but cabins are available to rent throughout the year. The park has boat rentals for those who wish to enjoy the water or fish. “We have hundreds of fishing tournaments that occur on the lake throughout the year,” says Lavelua. Ice fishing is offered during the Winter Blast Event and is available during the winter. In the fall, the Prince Gallitzin Apple Cider Festival takes place near the marina and cider is made using a hand-cranked press. Other activities include chainsaw carvings, hayrides, live music and local vendors.

Events at Crooked Run Campground
Off Skyline Drive is Benjamin Rannels' workshop, Rannels Rustics. Rannels is a chainsaw carver who spends most of his time traveling the eastern half of the United States, entertaining at fairs and events, but has made Reade his home base. His works often reflect nature, featuring bears, fish, and owls, reminiscent of the wildlife within the township and the nearby park. “They’ll pay me to entertain. I’ll carve at the shows. People will come up and watch,” says Rannels. “I’ll carve animals, whatever people want. At the end of the show, they’ll put my carvings up for auction. I’ve beat some of the fastest carvers in the United States. I can carve a 4-foot bear and an owl and detail and paint them in 15 minutes.” In April, Rannels and other chainsaw carvers travel about 70 miles to the Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous at The Ridgway Mills Campground in Ridgway to sell their carvings and auction pieces. Ridgway is known as the chainsaw carving capitol of the world and the Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous is the largest gathering of carvers in the world. Friends of Prince Gallitzin State Park hosts events year-round, including outdoor concerts, holiday events and festivals. In August, Santa and Mrs. Claus visit the Crooked Run Campground, and campers are encouraged to decorate their campsites for the holidays despite the summer season. Religious services are held at Hollentown Assembly of God, St Joan of Arc Church and Fiske United Methodist Church.

Hillsides are adorned with greenery, and several roads traverse the area, lined with the small communities of Glasgow, Mountaindale, Blandburg, Flinton, and Fallentimer. Large, manicured lawns line wide roadways, and homes are set far back from the streets, occasionally surrounded by fencing and always placed beside mature oak, hickory and maple trees. Colonial Revival Foursquare, split-level and minimal traditional are common styles in the area. Residences range from $50,000 to $200,000. “It’s a consistent area,” says Rossi. “Not a whole lot of new developments, but a consistent market for the community's residence. There are seasonal communities near the park because of the lake.”
