Liggett
Neighborhood in Reading, Pennsylvania
Berks County 19607, 19611
Small homes and condos just outside of Reading
Cape Cods, minimal traditional and ranch-style homes line Liggett’s straight streets. Though the neighborhood lacks sidewalks, residents can still be seen out for walks on the lightly trafficked streets. Many houses don’t have driveways, meaning on-street parking is the norm here. Fortunately, curb parking is plentiful. Single-family houses typically cost between $180,000 and $300,000. Low- and mid-rise condo buildings occupy the north end, with units priced between $150,000 and $220,000.Recreation includes a neighborhood park and waterside trails
Every neighborhood house is within a mile of the centrally located Brookline Park. Trees partially shade the playground and basketball court on the park’s east side, while a baseball field covers the rest of the green space. Less than a mile north of Liggett, roughly 4 miles of trails surround a portion of Wyomissing Creek in an area Wyomissing Borough calls The Parklands. On the west end, the Reading Public Museum’s permanent collection includes galleries dedicated to the museum’s history, fine art from around the world, and historical artifacts including a preserved Egyptian mummy, medieval armor, and 17th-century weaponry. Many students attend Reading School District
Area students are served by the Reading School District, which earns an overall grade of D-plus from Niche. Millmont Elementary School is about a mile east of the neighborhood and receives a C-minus score from Niche, while Central Middle School gets a D. There are 35 student clubs and activities at C-minus-rated Reading Senior High School, ranging from Arboretum Club to an esports team. Children on the west side of Liggett may instead attend the Governor Mifflin School District, which earns an overall rating of B and includes B-rated Mifflin Park Elementary, B-minus rated Governor Mifflin Intermediate and B-rated Governor Mifflin High School.Shillington Farmers Market held year-round
On the other side of Lancaster Avenue from Liggett, more than 25 vendors set up weekly at the Shillington Farmers Market. The indoor market is held year-round, and patrons come by to pick up homemade mustard, cuts of meat and imported Italian ingredients, as well as seasonal produce and offerings from several local restaurants. Four miles away, downtown Reading features Santander Arena and Santander Performing Arts Center. The former serves as the home arena for the Reading Royals, a minor-league hockey team. The performing arts center hosts musicals and concerts.Road and bus connections to downtown Reading
Lancaster Avenue connects the neighborhood to downtown Reading, about 3 miles away. Buses operated by BARTA, the countywide transit service, stop along Lancaster Avenue on their way to downtown Reading. The closest interstate, I-176, is 4 miles away, to reach the closest interstate, Interstate 176. Some locals commute to Philadelphia, a drive of just over 60 miles that typically takes one to two hours, depending on conditions.Local dining on Lancaster Avenue and in West Reading
Shopping runs take residents to Lancaster Avenue on Liggett’s south end. The road hosts a Giant supermarket, pharmacies and thrift stores, as well as a handful of local eateries. V&S Sandwiches has served hoagies across Reading since the ‘50s, and one of their shops still operates on Lancaster Avenue. Coffee and pastries are on the menu down the street at Rooted & Grounded Cafe, run by members of Kenhorst Mennonite Church in Liggett. Less than 2 miles north of the neighborhood, dozens of restaurants and boutiques line Penn Avenue in West Reading. “Sundays they have farmstands set up. There are different festivals there,” Gordon says. “When the weather is nice, you’ll see people walking up and down the street.” An example of West Reading’s frequent festivities is the Ice ‘N Spice Festival in January. Local artisans use blocks of ice to craft animals, benches and other sculptures, which line the street and are preserved by the freezing weather. “The different bars or shops will sponsor ice sculptures, so the sculptures have something to do with the business,” Gordon says. “During a time of year when you wouldn’t be walking outside, people get out to see the sculptures.”
