A neighborhood of Berks County, Pennsylvania, Liggett lies just outside of the boroughs of West Reading and Wyomissing. Both are popular spots in the Reading area, and the Liggett neighborhood features proximity to both, but at lower average home prices. Emily Gordon is a Realtor with Keller Williams Platinum Realty who’s based in Wyomissing, and she says “it’s the most coveted area” in the county. She adds, “West Reading is definitely a go-to place if you want to shop locally or go out for the evening.” Located south of the two boroughs, Liggett is made up of midcentury homes built alongside a neighborhood park and a retail-heavy roadway.

Local dining on Lancaster Avenue and in West Reading
Shopping runs take residents to Lancaster Avenue on Liggett’s south end. The road hosts a Giant supermarket, pharmacies and thrift stores, as well as a handful of local eateries. V&S Sandwiches has served hoagies across Reading since the ‘50s, and one of their shops still operates on Lancaster Avenue. Coffee and pastries are on the menu down the street at Rooted & Grounded Cafe, run by members of Kenhorst Mennonite Church in Liggett. Less than 2 miles north of the neighborhood, dozens of restaurants and boutiques line Penn Avenue in West Reading. “Sundays they have farmstands set up. There are different festivals there,” Gordon says. “When the weather is nice, you’ll see people walking up and down the street.” An example of West Reading’s frequent festivities is the Ice ‘N Spice Festival in January. Local artisans use blocks of ice to craft animals, benches and other sculptures, which line the street and are preserved by the freezing weather. “The different bars or shops will sponsor ice sculptures, so the sculptures have something to do with the business,” Gordon says. “During a time of year when you wouldn’t be walking outside, people get out to see the sculptures.”
