Culture condensed in a small package
St. Mary’s may be a small neighborhood near downtown Reading, but its community represents the city’s multicultural makeup. According to Marjorie DeJesus, a seasoned Reading-area Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty, St. Mary’s is “close to where a lot of the Latino communities come together. The Hispanic Center is just a couple minutes away, and there’s a large Ecuadorian and Dominican community down here.” Surrounded by Latin American markets, restaurants and community spaces, St. Mary’s is one of many places where the community is connected by a shared culture.
Inexpensive but historic row houses
St. Mary’s housing is made up of historic row houses; most homes were built in the early 1900s and have less than 1300 square feet. However, listings usually have four to five bedrooms and multiple levels. Prices range from $46,000 to $85,000 for models with less square footage that may need to be remodeled, while newly renovated listings can go for between $130,000 and $180,000. The homes generally have short, concrete stoops that lead directly onto the city’s wide sidewalks. On-street parking is the norm, but some homes do have detached garages that can generally fit one or two cars.

Parks closeby and after school activities

Over 6 acres wide, the park has a playground, various sports facilities, and the Olivet Boy's & Girl's Club, which can be found at the eastern end of the area. Family gatherings are common at the park’s pavilion and field house, and residents can rent out sports equipment or even the venue itself for events. City Park is considered Reading’s central green space and is a little over a 1/2 mile from St. Mary’s. Nearly 50 acres, the park features an all-abilities playground and a splash pad, as well as basketball and tennis courts. Beyond the playground are many walking trails and historic statues that are part of the park’s Veteran's Grove Memorial Park. Latin comfort food only a mile away
St. Mary’s locals have a few options within the neighborhood for their grocery shopping. Exodo Grocery Store is a bodega-style store that sells everyday cooking essentials and has an in-house butcher shop. El Primo Grocery And Deli sits on the neighborhood's eastern side and provides essential grocery items alongside quick, on-the-go bites. Residents must travel outside the neighborhood to find dine-in restaurants, but a warm meal is only 1 mile away. El Tronco Restaurant is a small, family-run business that offers flavorful Dominican-style dishes, and right next door, El Papi Restaurant serves traditional Latin American comfort food, like mofongo and empanadas, for prices as low as $10. For a drink after work, locals like to frequent Stork Bar a little over a 1/2 mile away. The spot has weekly eight-ball tournaments, and customers appreciate the quality and price of its Latin-inspired pub fare.
Car-dependent travel with some public transport options
Generally, the Berks Area Reading Transportation Authority, also known as BARTA, would provide the area with public transportation. However, the closest BARTA bus stop to the area is the RDI stop, which is slightly under 1 mile away. Therefore, most locals travel by car, and some even work outside the city. Residents are about 56 miles from Philadelphia and can arrive there by car in an hour and 20 minutes via U.S. Route 422 and Interstate 76. The closest airport, Lehigh Valley International Airport, is about 44 miles away.
