Historic row houses at pick and choose prices
Southeast Reading is full of historic row houses; most homes were built in 1900 and maintain their original traditional brick architecture and stone foundations. A two-bedroom home might list between $50,000 and $70,000, while a four-bedroom may cost between $190,000 and $225,000. Concrete stoops lead directly onto the city’s sidewalks, so residents can step out of their front door and get to the street in seconds. Parking is usually on-street, but some homes feature short gravel driveways wide enough for one car.Community gardening and the Veteran's Grove Memorial Park
Reading Iron Playground is a popular spot for families to get a little fresh air in the middle of the city. The space has a playground, basketball courts and a grassy open field for kids to run around on. Community and seasonal events like family barbeques, live performances and holiday celebrations are common in this shared space. The park also houses the Reading Iron Community Garden, where residents can grow flowers, herbs and vegetables. About 1 mile away from Southeast Reading is City Park, which is considered Reading’s central green space. The park features an all-abilities playground and splash pad, and beyond the playground are many walking trails, historic statues and ball sports courts. The park also houses the Veteran's Grove Memorial Park and the Volunteer Fireman’s Memorial Amphitheater.School programs that prepare students for life
Students can attend 10th & Green Elementary School; the school is working toward becoming a Leader In Me Lighthouse School, a school improvement process focused on building students' leadership skills. Students can then move on to Southern Middle School; both schools have a D rating from Niche. Students can complete their education at Reading Senior High School, which earns a C-minus rating from Niche. The school offers special services to its students who are homeless or at risk of homelessness through the Knight’s Closet, a free program that provides students with basic needs such as food, clothing, hygiene products and school supplies.
Catch concerts and Reading Royals games at Santander Arena
Under 1 mile from Southeast Reading is Santander Arena, a 9,000-seat entertainment venue used to host concerts and sporting events. It has welcomed many world-famous performers such as Daddy Yankee, Slipknot, Pitbull and Bad Bunny and is the home of the city’s professional hockey team, the Reading Royals. Due to its central location, many residents are within walking distance of the arena but may also experience traffic disruptions and on-street parking difficulties on event days.
Bussing around with BARTA
Berks Area Reading Transportation Authority, also known as BARTA, provides Southeast Reading with its public transportation services. Bus stops can be found around the neighborhood, but residents can catch their bus or make bus transfers at the BARTA Transportation Center. However, most locals travel by car, and some even work outside the city. Residents are less than 60 miles from Philadelphia and can arrive there by car in an hour via U.S. Route 422 and Interstate 76. Lehigh Valley International Airport is the nearest airport to the area at 43 miles away for more extensive travel.Authentic Latin American eats and train station beers
Locals do most of their shopping at CTown Supermarkets, but residents can also pick up traditional Latin American dry goods and produce at Jalisco Supermarket. If shoppers start to feel hungry, Jalisco Restaurant and Taqueria serves up authentic Mexican bites right next door, and Caribe Restaurant a 1/2 mile away is popular for its hearty Dominican fare. Saucony Creek Franklin Station Brewpub, a bar inside a restored 1930s train station, is where locals go to enjoy a local beer on tap after work. El Primo Bar & Grill is a favorite for a Friday or Saturday night out; locals love the Latin music they play and describe it as a lively place to dance and grab a drink.
