Redondo Beach has beach convenience and access to job hubs

Redondo Beach is a coastal city in Los Angeles County's South Bay, where residents live moments from the scenic shore, busy restaurants and job hubs. Homes here tend to cost less than nearby areas like Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, but Redondo Beach has more amenities, from its pier to Riviera Village. Housing ranges from manufactured to large single-family homes, and there are options for almost any budget.

How Redondo Beach has homes and prices of all kinds

The city has everything from manufactured homes to million-dollar gated estates. There are condo buildings and townhouses throughout, but most homes are detached properties with Spanish-inspired or contemporary designs. “South Redondo has more of a beachy feel,” says Dennis Hartley, an experienced associate broker with Compass. “You can see the ocean if you drive around, and so it’s more expensive.” North Redondo Beach is the more residential side, where the homes are set close together on sidewalk-lined streets. “A lot of people prefer North Redondo because it’s closer to the freeway and the prices are moderate,” Hartley says. The median sale price in Redondo Beach is about $1.6 million. Hartley mentions that detached single-family homes are the more expensive options, while condos and townhouses are usually cheaper and newer. Both parts of the city are in high demand, so homes can sell quickly.

It's easy to spend the day near the beach

The busiest public space in the city is the beach, especially around Veterans Park, where people use the fitness court, kids run around the playground and locals shop at the weekly farmers market. “The weather is amazing,” Hartley says. “[Redondo Beach] is right on the coast, so the summers are cooler and winters are warmer. The beach is available if you want it. There’s a great bike path that runs along the beach.” The Marvin Braude Bike Trail, known around Redondo Beach as The Strand, is a 22-mile walking and biking path you can take that parallels the shore and runs from Torrance to the Pacific Palisades. Hartley mentions North Redondo has a popular dog park in Dominguez Park, but the beach is always the busiest destination. The signature Redondo Beach Pier is the social hub for music, nightlife and festivals, where locals and tourists dine, fish and hang out on the water.

Heading to the Pier or Riviera Village for most shopping and dining

Hartley says there are high-end shops, restaurants and coffee houses spread throughout the community. The most options, though, are close to the shore. Redondo Beach Pier has popular spots like Old Tony’s and Kincaid's Fish, Chop & Steaks. There are plenty of restaurants along Route 1, like:

  • Kirari West Bake Shop, a gluten-free bakery that also sells sandwiches and salads
  • The Boy & The Bear, a local roaster that serves specialty coffee, teas and select baked goods
  • Wildflower Cafe, which serves comfort food for breakfast and lunch
  • Copper Pot Indian Grill & Cafe, where you can pick from a long menu of curries, seafood and small plate dishes
In South Redondo Beach, the Riviera Village has a walkable layout where you can stop into restaurants and boutiques or pick up groceries from Vons.

Living in a beach city that's also close to work

Redondo Beach may be where people want to live close to the beach, but you’re also near some major job hubs. “It’s well located to major employment, so there’s a lot of aerospace employment and engineering nearby,” Hartley says. “You can commute fairly easily to Downtown LA or the Westside, Century City.” Some people drive down the Pacific Coast Highway to jobs at Robinson Helicopter Co. Downtown Los Angeles is about 20 miles away, and the drive can take over an hour during heavy traffic on Interstates 110 and 405. The Los Angeles International Airport is closer, roughly 8 miles away, and you can avoid taking the interstate by using the highway, also called state Route 1. Beach Cities Transit and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority buses run throughout the city and the rest of South Bay.

Annual events make Redondo Beach even busier

The Festival of the Kite is one of California’s longest-running kite festivals. Redondo Beach Pier has hosted the event since the 1970s, and every March, people from all over visit for the live music, kite-flying contest and dancing. The Pier also hosts other popular events, from free summer concerts to the farmers market on Thursdays.
