A slower pace of life in the land of the turtles
Tulpehocken was first inhabited by the Turtle Tribe of the Lenape Native Americans, and the name comes from their language, meaning "land of the turtles." The temperate climate and network of creeks that turtles enjoyed made the land suitable for farming, which is still the primary use of the land today. The township includes the villages of Rehrersburg and Mt Aetna, which have a combined population of less than 1,000 people. Those who live here enjoy the quiet life, 25 miles away from the bustle of Reading, tucked just underneath the foothills of Blue Mountain.
From historical living to contemporary development
Homes in Tulpehocken span through the past two centuries. Rehrersburg is dotted with minimal traditional and American Foursquare houses from the 1800s that cost $200,000 to $300,000. With backyard wells and boiler heating, these older homes are right out of a history book. Scattered throughout Tulpehocken, mid-century ranch homes on half an acre start at $300,000 and can go up to $500,000 for larger lots and newer construction. And just north of Mt Aetna, recent developments offer a modern suburban feel in an otherwise rustic area. Houses in these neighborhoods cost around $400,000, and some have yet to be built.

Hiking and hunting in Blue Mountain
Tulpehocken sits south of Blue Mountain, which contains several Appalachian Trail trailheads and State Game Lands. These hiking and hunting options are just 8 miles away on Route 501, which runs right through Mt Aetna. For those who prefer to fish, Stoever's Dam Park, 9 miles away, is stocked with trout and bass. And right outside Mt Aetna, Lebanon Valley Golf Course is a popular spot to hit the greens.
Shop farm fresh and dine locally
Mt Aetna has two restaurants: Mancino's Pizza and 501 Grill & Tavern, both locally-owned favorites. Over in Rehrersburg, Feliciano's Pizza and Grill is like the combination of the two and is also a well-loved neighborhood staple. For grocery shopping, residents can shop locally at County Sunrise Creamery, a farm store with their own dairy products and locally sourced meats and produce. Brubaker Bargains is a popular spot for deals on name-brand products, but many residents also head 9 miles over to Lebanon for Aldi and Giant.

Life at the library
The newly renovated Bethel-Tulpehocken Public Library is one of the area's biggest community centers. "The library is a great resource, and we try to make it as available as we can to everyone," says Trish Scharff, a librarian at Bethel-Tulpehocken. "There are computers, free Wi-Fi and craft events — you don't even need a library card; we offer guest passes." The renovation increased the library size from 1,500 sq. ft. to 8,000 sq. ft. and the librarians hope to use the new space to hold more community events.
Rural schools with small class sizes
Students in the area are served by the Tulpehocken Area School District. Small class sizes ensure an overall 13-1 student-teacher ratio, less than the national average. Kids head north to Bethel Elementary School, rated B-minus by Niche, before moving on to Tulpehocken Junior Senior High School, rated C-plus. The Junior High School is being renovated to add a new media center and update the structure of the building. The school also provides a mobile hotspot program allowing students to take a Wi-Fi connection home, an essential initiative in such a rural area. “The library provides resources for kids that are homeschooled, which is a popular option in the area,” Scharff explains.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
