Finding a place in the Carpenter community
Wide open spaces meet small-town charm in Carpenter Township, Indiana. With thousands of acres of farmland surrounding the quaint town of Remington, homebuyers can choose to be a few steps from their next-door-neighbor's door, or to have five or more acres shielding them from the nearest residents. The township is 32 miles north of Lafayette, Indiana, and around 90 miles south of Chicago’s city center. While residents may have to travel 30 minutes to the nearest supermarket, small independent shops and restaurants add to Remington’s character and sense of community. “It’s a place where everyone knows and helps out their neighbors,” says Kathy Stucker, a local real estate agent with Stucker Realty Inc. “There are several factories that have been bringing in new people in recent years, but a lot of our population is generational. We’re a small town, but you can get everything you need without going far.”
Entry-level pricing and classic architecture
Rural living in Carpenter means lower taxes and relatively affordable housing costs, with the average home value sitting at $195,000. Many homes here were built in the mid-to-late 20th century, but some early 1900s bungalows and Victorian farmhouses can be found along Remington’s main roads. Quaint, 500-square-foot, two-bedroom brick homes with recently updated interiors have hit the market for less than $100,000. At the same time, high-end price tags can be $300,000 and above with five-bedroom, 3,000-square-foot Victorians with well-kept flooring and updated appliances. The area’s standard home is a three-bedroom ranch-style house, many of which were built in the 1970s. Away from the town’s center, among the surrounding open fields and farmland, are long-established houses on expansive lots of 20 acres and more.
