Hamptons tranquility without the travel
Not everyone has heard of Remsenburg-Speonk, but many of those familiar with the neighborhood love to talk about it. “Remsenburg is a dream,” says Jeannine Kowaleski, a Realtor at HomeSmart Premier Living Realty and Scala Properties who has been a year-round resident of Remsenburg for 10 years. “It’s just a very beautiful little town. You’re just on the outskirts, so it’s nice and quiet. The kids ride their bikes to the elementary school. You don’t see that a lot.” Those who live in Remsenburg-Speonk sometimes call it the first Hampton. “Here, you’ll find farmhouses, country retreats and bucolic pastures previously used to raise cattle,” says Ron Scala, the owner and principal broker of Scala Properties who has lived and worked in the area for 32 years. “And people started to take notice during the pandemic. Buyers discovered that they could shave as much as an hour off their commute time by living in Remsenburg. Commuters to the city find a quiet, conservative place here with very few rentals and no crowds.”

Easy access to Moriches Bay and nearby Atlantic Ocean beaches
Like many waterfront communities, boating and fishing are big here. Many locals join the Westhampton Yacht Squadron, a club perched right on Moriches Bay. “It’s a really cute little place,” Kowaleski says. “They do sailboat racing right on the bay. They teach sailing, swimming, tennis — a bunch of stuff there.” Although there aren’t any beaches along the neighborhood’s coastline, multiple beaches are just a short drive away. Rogers Beach is 5 miles away and Cupsogue Beach County Park, a particularly popular spot even in the winter thanks to its ideal location for seal watching, is just under 10 miles away. While the neighborhood doesn’t have traditional suburban parks, some homes are part of HOAs with amenities like tennis or pickleball courts.

Inland fixer-uppers from $700,000
“You know you’re in Remsenburg because you drive down South Country Road and you see all the wood shingle homes with white fences,” Kowaleski says. A century ago, according to Scala, the wealthy built on South Country Road where the horses and trolleys were. Today, waterfront properties attract all the attention. “If you live on the water and have a boat, you can visit friends who also live on the water or go out to lunch or dinner at a waterfront restaurant,” Scala says. “You can get anywhere on the water here; you can even go to the ocean.” If not directly situated on Moriches Bay or one of the creeks or canals off it, many homes have deeded water access that gives them permission to launch kayaks and other watercraft.
“Some of the homes here date back to the 1700s,” Scala says. “But over the years, beautiful modern homes have been built with sleek and open interiors and classic architecture to visually fit with the rest of the community.” Colonials, Cape Cods and new traditional homes sit alongside a smattering of unique home styles, from saltbox houses, Tudors or Mediterranean-inspired villas to modern homes. Many are set on an acre or more of land, with manicured lawns broken only by private pools or tennis courts. Fixer-uppers start at around $700,000 and can climb to around $1.2 million. More updated homes can climb past $5 million even when they’re inland, and bayfront homes can sell for as much as $18.5 million. The CAP Index crime score is 2 out of 10. The national average is 4.

Annual 5K and art shows
In June, runners participate in the Peg Larkins Memorial 5K, which starts and finishes at the elementary school. Art shows are also regularly held at The Academy on South Country Road, a historic building that was once the site of a private boys' school, now devoted to bringing artworks to the community. The Remsenburg Association also hosts neighborhood events, from a summer solstice party to events where members make holiday wreaths. “I don’t want to say it’s old fashioned, but I’m 60, and when I grew up, that’s what towns were like,” Kowaleski says. “And this town is still like that, which is nice.”

Dining along Montauk Highway
Mary’s Pizza and Pasta serves traditional Italian dishes in a relaxed atmosphere, and Little Gull Café is one of the neighborhood’s go-to spots. “They do a lot of homemade breads and stuff like that,” Kowaleski says. “It’s a very quaint, cute little place and they have music in the summer — they have bands play there.” Friends also meet up at Brewology295 for burgers and drinks close to home. The Farmers Market Farm Stand in Westhampton, less than 2 miles away, has fresh produce, seafood, bread, honey and more, all produced locally. Westhampton Beach also offers plenty of other shopping and dining options. “It’s maybe 3 miles to get into town, so it’s a very short trip to have access to everything in Westhampton Beach,” Kowaleski says. “Which is another draw because you’re close enough to get there but you’re far enough away where you’re not in the hustle and bustle.” For more essentials, King Kullen is located just over 3 miles away in Eastport.

LIRR to Manhattan or Montauk
Montauk Highway runs through the neighborhood and Sunrise Highway, also called New York State Route 27, runs along its northern edge. Not all homes get mail delivery
“The quirky thing about Remsenburg is that we don’t get mail delivery to our houses,” Kowaleski says. “We have to go to the post office.” Amazon and FedEx deliver packages to the houses just fine, though, Kowaleski says. Most of Speonk — as long as it’s north of Montauk Highway — gets its mail delivered directly, so this quirk is mostly specific to Remsenburg. Some may view it as an extra chore, but others see it as a regular way to see and socialize with their neighbors.
