Fast-paced living

At the heart of "The Biggest Little City in the World," Downtown Reno offers easy access to the city's casinos, eating establishments, and outdoor entertainment. Established in the mid-1800s in response to a mining rush, Reno is better known today for its gaming and tourism industries, bringing millions of tourists annually. As a result, residents are generally subject to a fast-paced daily routine that can be jarring for some but ideal for those who prefer an active lifestyle.

Condos and high rises on the Truckee River

The appeal of living in Downtown Reno tends to be centered around its proximity to the city's action, making traditional housing less common. "It's mostly condo living, so expect high HOA fees. Living downtown attracts a certain lifestyle," explains eXp realtor David Tully, who has served the area for nine years. "What's really great is the walkability and the access to casinos and shows." Prices begin in the low-$100,000s for studio-sized condos, with 2-bedroom options in the mid-$500,000s and high-rise penthouses reaching the high $700,000s. HOA fees range between $800 to $1,000 monthly.

Casinos and outdoor fun

With its tourism-centered economy, it's no surprise that recreation is one of Downtown Reno's biggest draws. Hotels and casinos like Circus-Circus and the Silver Legacy line the streets, offering games of chance, live shows, and dining options. Entertainment downtown, however, isn't limited to cards and slot machines. The Truckee River flows lazily through the city's center, offering natural scenery and several popular spots for fishing. Those searching for a tranquil setting to unwind and enjoy a good book could try Wingfield Park, which provides greenery and live performances for those who need a break from the neon lights. At Greater Nevada Field, baseball fans cheer for the Reno Aces, a Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Bowling fans can work on their spin at the National Bowling Stadium, a 4-story facility with 78 tournament-quality lanes.

Elk and locally raised produce

When it comes to groceries, the Great Basin Community Food Co-Op has been supplying residents with local, regional, and Nevada direct producers of fruits, vegetables and meats since 2005. Take other shopping trips to the Meadowood Mall, 6 miles southeast of downtown. Spend nights out trying the sauteed elk medallions at Wild River Grille or indulging in plates of comfort food favorites at the Gold 'n Silver Inn, a Reno institution since 1956. Of course, most casinos have their own restaurants, though it might be difficult to leave without trying one more hand of blackjack.
