Homes in the foothills
Virginia Foothills, as its name implies, consists of homes lining hillsides that offer panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada’s mountain ranges. This Reno suburb is home to some of the city’s most popular housing options, ranging in price from $530,000 to $1.25 million, with mountain views and rolling chaparral hills forming a scenic backdrop to many residences. These streets include trees for both pleasant aesthetics and occasional offerings of shade for a stroll down the block. Hodges says of this neighborhood, “It’s between suburban and rural, with large lots and a mixture of homes. Some of the foothills have tracts on half-acres, while some of the housing is more ranch-style.” Much of Virginia Foothills’ housing stock consists of older ranch-style homes, but larger “Modern Ranch” houses and contemporary-style residences add great variety to the housing stock. Even as residents live along the border with the Sierra Nevada, most homes feature well-maintained lawns, and some, especially more recently built family homes, offer large lot sizes and vast back yards.Rambling the range
Outdoor recreation is a huge part of the Virginia Foothills experience. Hodges says, “You can trail-ride out your back door; if you have a horse or quad, you can ride on federal land up to Virginia City.” Within the neighborhood, the Damonte Ranch Trail invites hikers to stroll through brushland, around local marshes and in the shadow of majestic mountain peaks that dominate the skyline. Kids may enjoy a trip to Cyan Park, home to a playground, sports facilities and even a splash pad for warm summer months."A"-mazing schools
Students attend schools given high ratings by Niche, including the A-minus-rated Brown Elementary School, the A-minus-rated Kendyl Depoali Middle School and the A-minus-rated Damonte Ranch High School. Damonte Ranch High is known for its strong performing arts program and other opportunities for student engagement both inside and outside the classroom.Travels and trails
Residents live just 14 miles south of Reno’s downtown, 10 miles south of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, 13 miles northwest of Virginia City and 27 miles northeast of the iconic Lake Tahoe, putting Virginia Foothills locals within a short drive of all the region’s most appealing destinations.Coffee and culinary classics
Residents have easy access to suburban Reno’s shopping and dining outlets, from a Sprouts Farmers Market to a Raley’s O-N-E Market grocery store. Coffee lovers not only live around the corner from the local Starbucks, but also from the Tahoe Natural Café, a new restaurant serving up sandwiches and burritos along with espressos, hot apple cider and other hot drinks. Another popular eatery is the Twisted Fork, a “New American”-style restaurant serving American classics from mac and cheese to fried fish and burgers. Shoppers can spend the whole day at the Shayden Summit Reno shopping center, where brand-name clothing, jewelry and department stores sit beside the local Cinemark movie theatre and a selection of restaurants.Founding of the Foothills
Virginia Foothills derives its name the prospector James “Old Virginny Finney” Fennimore, who founded the silver-mining boomtown of Virginia City. Virginia Foothills is much more of a recent development than its namesake city; most of its homes were built during the 2000s and 2010s, with major local developers such as the Toll Brothers transforming this patch of desert brushland into a booming housing market on Reno’s southern outskirts. While the Foothills' location exposes it to a severe risk of wildfire, according to Risk Factor, the city of Reno has published several online resources to help homeowners deal with this ever-present threat.
