Rhine is a vastly rural community in Dodge County
The sun-bleached, outstretched roads of Rhine, Georgia, weave around massive farms, dense forests and wide-open grass fields. And at its heart, there are a couple of gas stations and a single stoplight. “It’s a small little country town with a big farming community,” says local Realtor Stephanie Griffis of Destination Realty. She’s sold homes across the region for eight years and lives in Dodge County. “If you drive through, you’ll see lots of farms, tractors and livestock. It’s just peaceful.” It’s far from busier communities, and according to Griffis, it stays quiet. “If you want a place to be away from the hustle and bustle, [Rhine] is the place to be.”
Homes rarely come on the market in Rhine
Houses rarely go on the market: Two homes sold in late 2024 and early 2025, with prices ranging from $66,000 for just under 700 square feet to $193,000 for a nearly 1,250-square-foot home. Land is one of Rhine's main draws; of the community’s few active listings, property sizes measure from 50 to 100-plus acres. The lots are smaller at the community’s core, measuring around a half-acre.

There are currently no Niche scores for these two schools. Dodge County Middle has a C-plus on Niche, and Dodge County High scores a B. The high school offers career and technical education programs with specialized pathways, including world language, engineering and automobile technology. Students can also participate in apprenticeship programs through the Heart of Georgia Technical College, where subjects include childcare and health occupations.
Hunting, fishing and boating in Dodge County
Rhine offers access to nearby public green spaces and wildlife management areas where residents enjoy fishing, boating and hunting. Half Moon Landing in Abbeville has a boat ramp that slips into a bend of the Ocmulgee River. Adjacent to the boat ramp is a large green space with a paved walking path and towering pine trees. The Dodge County Public Fishing Area, or Steve Bell Lake, is about 17 miles north of Rhine. Concrete boat ramps, a fishing pier and nature trails surround the 100-plus acre central lake. Anglers often reel in largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and redear sunfish. The public fishing area also has an archery range, picnic tables and restrooms. Though many residents hunt on their properties, they can also head to a nearby wildlife management area. The Ocmulgee Wildlife Management Area is about 37 miles away, permitting deer, turkey and small game hunting.
Heading into Eastman for shopping and dining
Rhine’s commercial infrastructure is limited to a few businesses in the center of the community. Two gas stations have markets where locals can grab snacks, drinks and a few groceries. Rhine is also home to a bank, a post office and a pharmacy. “The pharmacy serves multiple counties," Griffis says. "Everyone loves the pharmacist.” Nearby Abbeville has a couple of restaurants, but residents mainly head 15 miles into Eastman for shopping and dining. In Eastman, residents can grab a latte at The Frozen Bean or a home-cooked southern meal at Pittman’s Sidetrack. Other popular Eastman spots include I Heart Tacos and Jack’s Family Restaurant. Eastman is home to Harvey’s Supermarket and Walmart Supercenter.
Navigating Dodge County
Rhine is car-dependent and removed from busy towns and cities. U.S. Route 280 bisects the community, connecting it with Abbeville about 7 miles west and Milan about 9 miles east. State Route 117 runs north and south, intersecting with U.S. 280 at the community’s center. The nearest medical facility is Dodge County Hospital, about 14 miles north in Eastman. The Middle Georgia Regional Airport is about 61 miles northwest. Dublin is a 45-mile trip northeast.
