Richfield neighbors Minneapolis and Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, giving residents easy access to everything the Twin Cities metro has to offer. Even with so much around it, this suburb stands out as its own city thanks to its extensive park system and busy Main Street. People drive, bike or take the bus to get around.
Like many first-ring suburbs surrounding the Twin Cities, there are plenty of mid-20th-century houses like Cape Cods and ranch-style homes. You can also find older Tudor-inspired cottages and Colonial Revivals. While some properties have attached garages, it’s more common to have detached ones that are next to or behind the main house. Single-family homes generally cost between the low $200,000s and the mid-$700,000s, while townhouses and condos, which are much rarer, range from under $100,000 to the mid-$400,000s. The median single-family home price is much lower than in nearby communities like Edina and West Bloomington. “The area has become more popular,” says Realtor Julie Desrochers with eXp Realty, who has been working in the Twin Cities for over 15 years. “It has lower prices than some of the surrounding areas, so there is more possibility of appreciation.” Lower prices help drive higher demand. “There are some places I’ve seen listed on a Friday that are pending on Monday,” Desrochers says.
One of the reasons people move to Richfield is its location. “We are an incredibly close-knit community that is super accessible for work and travel,” says former city councilmember Simon Trautmann. Interstate 35 West leads directly to downtown Minneapolis, which is less than 10 miles (15 minutes) away. You can reach downtown Saint Paul in 15 miles (25 minutes). Both the Mall of America and the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport are about a 5-mile (10-minute) drive. While proximity to the airport means residents can hear planes, it is a fair trade-off for convenience.
When not driving, many people ride their bikes. Richfield is one of the most bikeable cities, according to the League of American Bicyclists, with almost 45 miles of existing bike routes and more on the way. Public transportation is another option, with Metro Transit and Southwest buses and rapid transit lines.
With over 450 acres of green space across the city, Richfield residents spend plenty of time outside. “There are a ton of incredible parks, but two really stand out: Veterans Park and the Wood Lake Nature Center,” Trautmann says. “They are both amazing resources.” Veterans Park is a hub of activities centered around Legion Lake, with events like the Richfield Farmers Market on Saturday mornings from May through October, as well as lots of amenities. The city is served by the Richfield Public School District, which receives a B from Niche. Richfield High School, also rated B, has the Career & College Readiness Center to help students prepare for life after graduation through resources like college and job fairs. There are also private education options, like the Academy of Holy Angels, and charters like Seven Hills Preparatory Academy, which serves kindergarten through eighth grade. Both schools earn an A.
