Richfield, a friendly community
The village of Richfield offers its residents dining, shopping and highly rated schools 27 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Homebuyers enjoy living in the village for its scenic rural backdrop and access to outdoor activity. “Recreation is a big draw for homebuyers. People appreciate the skiing, hiking trails, the many lakes and the golfing,” says Natalie Wiedmeyer, a realtor who sells homes in the area for Exit Realty Results. The village has gradually grown over the past century to roughly 11,700 people. “Richfield was originally a farming community, and many of the original families who created Richfield have stayed in the area,” Wiedmeyer says. “It’s still a very tight-knit, intimate community where people know their neighbors and spend time together.” Four miles east of Richfield, locals will undoubtedly see Holy Hill. This Roman Catholic Marian shrine draws nearly half a million visitors annually and offers weekly mass for locals. The early 20th-century basilica is one of the most prominent architectural features of the region and is prominently seated atop a hill overlooking the region.
Suburban single-family homes
“There is a good variety of affordable housing and more expensive houses. You can get in the area with $300,000,” Wiedmeyer says. Accessors value a three-bedroom, one-bathroom 1890s brick home near the noisy railroad tracks at around $230,000. For $350,000, a homebuyer can purchase a two-bedroom, one-bathroom 1950s cabin with access to Friess Lake. A 1960s two-bedroom ranch-style home overlooking Bark Lake is valued at around $430,000. A four-bedroom colonial-style home built in 2000 is valued at $670,000. A four-bedroom 2018 ranch-style home is valued at around $870,000. Further out in the country, homebuyers can find a six-bedroom, four-bathroom craftsmen-style home built in 2015 valued at $1 million. A five-bedroom, four-bathroom 1995 brick home with an in-ground pool sells for $1.1 million. “Some of the older subdivisions are experiencing some turnover with younger families coming into the area,” Wiedmeyer says.

Highly rated public schools
Many children attend Friess Lake Elementary with an A-minus Niche rating and a 14-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Richfield Middle School has an A Niche rating. Most teens move on to Germantown High School with an A-minus Niche rating and a 96% graduation rate.

Outdoor recreation on land and water
About 4 miles to the east, the Loew Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest offers locals over 1,000 acres of land for hiking, fishing, hunting and horseback riding. But overnight camping is not allowed. Residents like to paddle canoes and kayaks and fish for bass and pike on Friess Lake on the community’s western border. People can launch their boats at Wild Marsh Landing on Little Friess Lake, connected to Friess Lake. In the winter, residents fish through holes in the ice on Bark Lake, on the community’s eastern edge. The 33-acre Richfield Historical Park includes meandering hiking trails and several structures that teach locals the area’s history. Visitors can see the late 19th-century Messer/Mayer Mill, which still has its original machinery. Residents spend relaxing afternoons on the 45-hole Kettle Hills Golf Course. The Richfield Soccer Club teaches local children the value of teamwork and sportsmanship. Residents travel 6 miles west of Richfield to shred the slopes at Heiliger Huegel Ski Club.
Local restaurants and big-box retail
Locals enjoy veggie burgers and Rueben sandwiches at Pleasant Hill Bar & Grill. At The Copper Dock, residents dine on pan-seared duck breast and escargot while watching the sunset over Friess Lake. Joe Residents fill up on jumbo wings and draft beer at Joe Mama’s Bar & Grill. Richfield Plaza is home to multiple businesses, including a Mexican grill, a dentistry, a coffee bar, a pharmacy and a tuxedo store. Folks do their grocery shopping at the Piggly Wiggly. Just off US Route 41, Cabela’s is the ideal place to buy cold-weather clothing and sporting goods equipment.

Entertainment and community events
Residents travel 13 miles west to watch new film releases at Shubert’s Hartford Theatre. For the holiday season, a local pet-sitting business called Charming Paws invites community members to bring their pets to be photographed with the Grinch. The Richfield Historical Society holds events like the Luminary Walk, where residents carve pumpkins, make cotton candy and socialize in the warmth of bonfires. The Richfield Lions Club hosts a chicken roast to raise money for the community. Every fourth week of August, the community holds a Richfield Days festival, which includes a parade, a softball tournament, food and drink vendors and a classic car show.

A car-reliant neighborhood
Residents travel 27 miles southeast to Milwaukee via Interstate 41. “It’s not uncommon for locals to commute to work in Milwaukee,” Wiedmeyer says. Locals take flights from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, about 5 miles south of Milwaukee’s downtown. Richfield’s downtown has sidewalks, but most of the community is not walkable because most businesses and houses are spread out. The village does not have a bus system. In the winter, many people get around using snowmobiles.
