Bellwood

Post-war homes and new traditional subdivisions
Two-lane backroads stem from Jefferson Davis Highway, bringing residents home to Bellwood’s quiet residential streets. Most houses here date back to the 1940s and 1970s when the US Defense Supply Center first moved into the neighborhood. Like most post-war suburbs, Bellwood’s original homes feature traditional cape cod and ranch-style architecture. These boxy, brick houses sit on well-kept green lawns that back up to leafy pine woods. Over the last 20 years, new traditional homes with a similar, bulky build have been developed in organized subdivisions throughout the neighborhood. Most three-bedroom homes range between $250,000 and $325,000, but some fixer-uppers cost closer to $175,000.Get to Downtown Richmond in less than 15 miles
Jessica Hall, a nearby resident and local Realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, says Bellwood’s central location is one of the neighborhood’s biggest draws. “We’re literally two minutes from Interstate 95, two minutes from Route 288 and five minutes to 295.” US Route 1, locally known as Jefferson Davis Highway, passes through the center of Bellwood, intersecting with Pocahontas Parkway just north. This route takes locals about 15 miles northwest to the Richmond International Airport. Parallel to Route 1, I-95 follows the historic James River into Downtown Richmond. While the city’s fixed route buses stop along Jefferson Davis Parkway, most residents find driving more efficient.Shop every weekend at the Bellwood Flea Market
Jefferson Davis Highway is the neighborhood’s small commercial thoroughfare, with fast food favorites and longtime neighborhood staples. Driving along, residents can stop by international chains like Arby’s, pick up spicy Birria tacos at Piri Piri Chicken or enjoy a brisket sandwich on the outdoor patio at PG BBQ #1. While hole-in-the-wall restaurants sit at almost every stoplight, Bellwood’s best-known restaurant, The Half-Way House, offers a unique fine dining experience in a 19th-century farmhouse. Only 2 miles away, a cluster of shopping centers provides locals with all their grocery needs and a few department stores. Locals can do some more shopping every weekend at the neighborhood flea market.Wind through history at Richmond National Battlefield Park
Bellwood’s parks and protected nature reserves connect residents to their past and provide a unique historical experience. Anglers can launch fishing boats into the James River from the Dutch Gap boat landing. Tree-shaded nature trails wind through history along the coastal plains at Richmond National Battlefield Park. More nature trails and prime fishing spots are just a short drive away at Pocahontas State Park. During the summer, residents can head to the park’s aquatic center to escape the humidity or spend an afternoon kayaking on the lakes. Back in the neighborhood, Bensley Park is an excellent spot for kids to run on the soccer fields or play with friends at the playground.Year-round curriculum at Bellwood Elementary
Students may attend Chesterfield County Public Schools, all of which score a C on Niche. Students living in the Quail Oaks subdivision walk to Bellwood Elementary. “Their motto is no child left behind, and that is most definitely true,” says Debra Cobb, a longtime neighborhood resident and local school bus driver. While Bellwood follows a year-round schedule, Cobb says that in 2024, Falling Creek Elementary is “changing its year-round program over the summer.” Parents, students and teachers are thrilled about the new middle school that will replace Falling Creek Middle. Ninth graders move on to Meadowbrook High School, which recently earned statewide recognition for its heart-safe program.
