Suburban calm and urban convenience
Laurel sits in northwest Richmond, between Short Pump and downtown, both of which are just a 20-minute drive away. “It’s a gorgeous area, with well-established developments where everyone takes very good care of their properties,” says Bobbie Goad, a top Realtor with Long & Foster Real Estate who has been working with clients locally since 2010. She says that many of her buyers are interested in Laurel for the resale value. “There are smaller homes here, and even townhomes, so a lot of people view Laurel as the spot for their first or second, as opposed to their long-term or forever home,” says Goad. “It’s close to shopping, and the school system is good,” she says, referring to nearby retail options in Short Pump and along Staples Mill Road. Also, Henrico County is, in fact, a more highly rated school district than Richmond City Public Schools. Goad: “It’s just a very well-established, nice, upscale suburban area.”
Well-maintained Traditional-style homes
The residential sections of Laurel are made up of quiet, neatly laid out streets, many of which end in cul-de-sacs and are shaded by established trees. Some subdivisions feature sidewalks. “It’s a well-established area,” says Goad. “The thing that I like about it the most is that everyone takes really good care of their property. All of the lawns are manicured, and you can tell that everyone who lives here takes pride in their homes.” Goad says that the well-maintained traditional Colonial Revival and Modern Transitional-style single-family homes here are on the small side compared to communities farther out in the county. “Your typical three or four-bedroom house will be between 1,400 and 1,700 square feet, whereas a little farther west you’d find homes for closer to 6,000 square feet. But prices reflect that—they run anywhere from $300,000 to $400,000,” she says.
There's also many newer homes built in keeping with the traditional style in Laurel, Virginia.

Henrico County schools
Neighborhood kids attend schools in the Henrico County Public Schools system. The exact path they take during their grade school careers varies depending on their address, so parents are advised to double-check the boundary maps ahead of registration. Many go to Dumbarton Elementary, Brookland Middle and John Randolph Tucker High. In 2023, Dumbarton earned a C-plus from Niche and Brookland earned a C. The high school earned a B-plus that same year. Tucker High is the only one of Henrico County’s nine high schools that hosts three specialty centers: Advanced College Academy, International Baccalaureate and Spanish Language and Global Citizenship (which is known as Spanish Immersion). Students participating in the Advanced College Academy graduate with both a high school diploma and an associate degree, earned by taking dual enrollment courses in partnership with Reynolds Community College.

There is a lot of space between the houses and there are not very many abandoned properties that are anywhere nearby.

A lot of places in the Short Pump area are very good as well as places that are down the other end of Broad St. Some popular restaurants include Burger Bach, Cheesecake Factory, and Sushi King.

I just moved here, and this is my first year out in the world as a Real Live Grownup. I have had a great time here so far - people are pretty friendly, and I am greatly enjoying the amount of fun stores and museums in the area. It's not far from downtown either, and downtown has a great nightlife.
