Emerald green hillside views
In aptly named La Sierra Hills, nearly every resident has a view of the undulating, sage-covered hillside from the comfort of their home. Hiking trails snaking through the steep hills in the western portion of the neighborhood provide a convenient escape into nature, while shopping and dining options are just a short drive away. Nearly all buildings in the neighborhood are homes built between 1960 and 1980, with well-maintained sidewalks stretching between them. La Sierra Hills is a quiet, tranquil neighborhood about 12 miles southwest of downtown Riverside.

Hiking, biking and golfing
La Sierra Hills offers locals plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, whether they hike up to Pumpkin Rock to see the landmark boulder painted like a jack-o'-lantern, or spend the afternoon at the adjacent Pike's Peak Park, among picnic areas and farmhouse-themed playgrounds. Additionally, La Sierra Park has athletic amenities and Doty Trust Park has an exercise trail and a seasonal water park to cool off in the summer. Golfers can practice their swings at the nearby Hidden Valley Golf Club. Cyclists can bike along La Sierra Avenue to La Sierra Park, or ride on one of the trails at Pikes Peak Park. More cycling trails are in the future: once the Santa Ana River Trail is finished, it will connect various parks – including La Sierra Park – along its 110-mile path. It will stretch from the San Bernardino County National Forest to the shoreline at Huntington Beach.
Doty Trust Park is the perfect place for an afternoon hike.

Cul-de-sacs below the hills
The winding avenues and quiet cul-de-sacs of La Sierra Hills are fringed with landscaped lawns and towering trees. Homes tend to be clustered in the neighborhood's eastern portion below the hills. While some homes are within gated and master planned communities, all subdivisions have great views of the mountains. When it comes to residences, “there are two distinct tracts – semi-custom homes and newer, post-2000 homes with a community pool and parks,” says James Monks, Realtor and Manager at Windermere Tower Properties and third generation Riversider. Some homes fuse different architectural styles, like the clean geometry and low-pitched roofs of the Craftsman style, mixed with the expansive single-story structure of the ranch-style. Prices range from about $560,000 to $1 million.

Fun for all ages
When it comes to entertainment beyond the great outdoors, residents head to Castle Park about a mile away. “Castle Park was built by a competitor to Knott’s Berry Farm,” Monks says. “It’s a small, affordable amusement park. It’s not a big-name park, but it sells out every weekend.” It’s got mini golf, arcade games and rides to entertain the family. For locals 55 and over who want to hang out and socialize, La Sierra Senior Center hosts various activities in its fitness center, library and billiards room.
