Step right up, folks, don’t be shy: Boyden Heights may have once been a Coney Island of New England, but this former recreation hub is entering a new phase. George Boyden was the founder of Boyden Heights amusement park and other fun destinations along the shore, which eventually shuttered and gave way to a Standard Oil tank farm. Yet the waterfront around Boyden Heights has remained unobscured, and today it’s rapidly attracting homebuyers who value a quieter green retreat. If you want a splash of excitement, though, it’s still easy to reach.
“People in this area are going to seek out Barrington for dining options, it’s that close,” says Realtor Elizabeth Kirk. “
Housing styles in Boyden Heights lean towards modest and tidy. For example, you can find renovated prewar bungalows that are set next to other timeless genres like Cape Cods, giving a classic suburban feel to the neighborhood overall. Look for prices to start in the low $400,000s. Roomier styles are available once you move into the mid $400,000s. If you prefer midcentury simplicity, there are ranches with a fenced backyard and classic open floor plan. Or go big with an updated four-bedroom, two-story American foursquare: the quintessential wide front porch is great for entertaining or lounging.
Silver Spring School is a K-5 elementary that enrolls 250 students. With a close student-teacher ratio of 11 to 1, it’s no wonder that this school earned high marks from Niche: an A- in the teachers category and a B overall. Riverside Middle is also well regarded. Despite a larger student body of 530 students in grades 6-8, it too maintains an 11 to 1 student-teacher ratio. Niche gave the school a B+ in the teachers category, and a B- overall. In 2023, Riverside Middle received a Golden Apple Award, which is a state initiative to recognize creative and safe classroom environments. East Providence High is the largest school in the local pipeline, with over 1,500 students enrolled. Niche gives the school a B- overall. The school got a full makeover, and in 2021 a new building opened with 45 classrooms and abundant athletic facilities.
Buses run along Pawtucket Avenue, the central thoroughfare for Boyden Heights. From here, various recreational and outdoor destinations fork off. While only a 6-hole course, the Silver Spring Golf Club is considered a hidden gem among devoted locals. The Boyden Heights Conservation Area offers 10 acres of woodlands and marshy cove to immerse in. A dock jutting into the cove is great for observing birds —and across the cove you can spy the Squantum Association’s Colonial Revival clubhouse. Also nearby is the East Bay Bike Path, a 14.5-mile paved trail that runs along a former railroad route. Restaurants like Spaghetti Lane in Barrington are go-to crowd-pleasers, with dependable menu items like mushroom risotto and eggplant parmesan.
Boyden Heights is moving to quieter days, but a spirit of fun endures.
