Roaming Shores-Rock Creek offers serenity flush with recreation
The Roaming Shores-Rock Creek area surrounds residents with opportunities for outdoor adventure. This northeast Ohio community consists of the separate villages of Roaming Shores and Rock Creek, which have a combined population of under 2,500. The largest private lake in Ohio anchors Roaming Shores, while Rock Creek provides a quieter atmosphere filled with classic houses. Together, they give homebuyers plenty of options. “With Rock Creek, I think you get the best of both worlds,” says Toni Noday-Krager, who’s with McDowell Real Estate and won the company’s realtor of the year award in 2022, her first full year in the business. “In Rock Creek, you’re going to get acreage. You’re going to get the opportunity for a little more green space. In Roaming Shores, you get the sense of community.”
Spacious lake plays a leading role
Lake Roaming Rock in Roaming Shores is the No. 1 draw to this area, Noday-Krader says. The manmade body of water stretches 550 acres and is private, open to Roaming Shores property owners in the Rome Rock Association. Fishing is a popular pastime on the lake, for species including bass and catfish. Noday-Krader says people also like to water ski and jet ski here. Roaming Shores’ two beaches provide swimming access to the lake, swimming pools and playgrounds. The lake buzzes in the warmer months, as many Roaming Shores residents are seasonal.
Besides the lake, residents of Roaming Shores and Rock Creek have access to a section of the Western Reserve Greenway, a 50-mile paved trail system. Rock Creek’s Brandeberry Park features a pavilion and offers access to Rock Creek itself, which is known for its small waterfalls.
Modern and established homes fill the area’s rustic landscape
Many of the houses in Roaming Shores are New Traditional-style options built since 1990. Some properties are secluded on at least half an acre, and others border the lake. The community’s HOA, which affords lake access, costs $95 to $104 monthly. “Some people will purchase vacant land parcels just for the lake access,” Noday-Krager says. “But you’re still paying HOA fees and dues." Homes in Roaming Shores that aren’t on the water sell for $140,000 to $550,000, while lakefront houses garner $640,000 to $900,000.
Rock Creek is even more rural, with lots spanning an acre in some cases. The homes here are older, often built from 1860 to 1900 with gable-front or colonial styling. Properties usually sell for $140,000 to $190,000.
Communities light up on holidays
Both Roaming Shores and Rock Creek organize their own events for residents, and Noday-Krager says they’re well-attended. People in Roaming Shores have choices like a summer concert series at the Kathy Crandall Entertainment Pavilion, with several performances from May to September. Also, a Fourth of July celebration featuring a 5K and 1-mile run/walk, a volleyball tournament, a cardboard boat race and fireworks. Rock Creek hosts a lighted Christmas parade, complete with snacks and games at the community’s fire hall.
Serving burgers to pasta, area restaurants are popular
Diners can get a taste of the Roaming Shores lakefront at Paradise Bay, whether they live here or not. The spot has a patio by the water, and is liked in part for its burgers. Pasta Oven in Rock Creek is a staple, Noday-Krager says. The lasagna is popular, but Pasta Oven is also a draw for breakfast. Cantini’s Village Market in Rock Creek is an option for everything from grocery items to fishing bait, near a Dollar General and a combined Family Dollar and Dollar Tree. Noday-Krager says people head to other communities like Jefferson for more amenities. Located 10 miles northeast, Jefferson has a combined Sander’s grocery store and True Value Hardware.
Jefferson Area schools include a range of electives
Most of Rock Creek and Roaming Shores are part of the Jefferson Area Local School District, which carries a B-minus grade from Niche. Students attending the C-plus-rated Rock Creek Elementary can participate in the Latchkey Program, which provides care before and after school for a fee. Jefferson Area Junior High also gets a C-plus and offers a school publication elective where students get experience producing morning announcement broadcasts and creating the yearbook.
