The neighborhood is also about a mile northwest of the restaurant scene in downtown Roanoke, and the area’s sidewalk-lined streets lead to bus stops and nearby businesses.

20th century Foursquares and duplexes
Parts of Gilmer still have historic homes the Roanoke Land and Improvement Company built in the late 1800s for their large base of railroad workers. Traces of the area’s industrial history are still present in the neighborhood. The Norfolk Southern Railroad Yard is just to the south of the neighborhood, and the southern section of Gilmer still has industrial services like auto shops and roofing services. Residential streets are gridded, with single-family homes sitting close together on small lots. American Foursquares from the late 1800s and early 1900s usually cost between $70,000 and $220,000, depending on renovations. Duplexes from the mid-1900s are priced between $100,000 and $150,000.
