Railroad neighborhood adapted to present-day
Hurt Park is an extension of Southwest Roanoke’s early 20th-century railroad housing, with 1915 being the median year homes were built. This was a neighborhood for wealthy railroad executives and other upper-class Roanokers. Now, the area maintains much of this historic housing, with shotgun-style and American Foursquare homes, but with some modern adaptations. A good bit of industrial space sits outside residential roads; however, domestic streets are relatively quiet and separated from industry, with single-family homes and cars parked on the curb. “It’s a super walkable area,” says Roanoke local and REALTOR® with MKB REALTORS® Bailey Jenkins. “There are old homes that you’d pick out of a Sears catalog, and the community has maintained the history and charm.”
Roanoke City Public Schools and the West End Center for Youth
The neighborhood is zoned for Roanoke City Public Schools. Students can attend Hurt Park Elementary School, which gets a C from Niche, before James Madison Middle School, which earns a B-minus. They can finish their public education at Patrick Henry High School, which gets a B and offers Dual Enrollment with Virginia Western Community College. Within the neighborhood is the West End Center for Youth, which offers academic enrichment programs to Roanoke’s students. Program Director Karen Pillis notes that the center began because neighborhood kids needed a safe place to go after school. Now, the center attracts kids from all over Roanoke, providing services like homework help, arts education and social and emotional learning.
Early 20th-century housing
Many of Hunt Park’s homes were built for railroad executives in the late 19th and early 20th century. “It’s like owning a piece of history,” Jenkins says. “It keeps the neighborhood stuck in time.” American Foursquares are the dominant home style here, with prices typically ranging from $100,000 to $300,000. There are also a few bungalows, shotgun- and Craftsman-style homes scattered throughout the neighborhood that maintain a similar price range. Some single-family homes that need updating will cost under $100,000. “There’s something for everyone in the neighborhood,” Pillis says. “There’s a good amount of both homeowners and renters.”
Pocket parks and community gardens
Hurt Park, from which the neighborhood gets its name, extends from Hurt Park Elementary School. This green space has scattered trees, a playground and a basketball court. Residents can rent a plot and grow produce alongside their neighbors at the nearby Hurt Park Community Garden. Perry Park is within walking distance of some homes. Here, families picnic at the pavilion, kids climb around on the playground, teenagers play pickup games on the basketball court and dogs run in the open green space.
Small markets and restaurants
There are a few restaurants and small markets in the neighborhood. Portabella is the go-to for takeout pizza and garlic knots, while Heavenly Foods dishes out soul food, like pork chop sandwiches and pound cake. S & S Grocery & Deli is a great place to grab last-minute ingredients for dinner or a quick lunch from the deli counter. Jennifer Grocery is another modest grocery store. It’s a family-owned neighborhood staple with a small grocery selection. A larger concentration of shops and restaurants can be found about 2 miles east in Downtown Roanoke.
Getting around Hurt Park
“It’s convenient to all the neighborhoods in Roanoke and the west part of the city,” Pillis says. Downtown Roanoke is about 2 miles east, and locals can get there using Salem Avenue or by taking a Valley Metro bus that runs along the neighborhood’s main roads. Residents can reach Salem by traveling west on Lynchburg Turnpike for about 6 miles. Vinton, about 5 miles northeast, can be accessed via Orange Avenue. The Norfolk Southern Railway runs through the neighborhood, which can occasionally make things noisy. And to get out of the mountains, the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport is 5 miles north of the neighborhood.
