Proximity to golf, hiking in northeast Roanoke
There’s green in nearly every direction of Monterey. Two golf courses are on one side of the northeast Roanoke neighborhood, while the forests of Read Mountain Preserve encompass the land on the opposite side. However, it’s not a ritzy golf club community. Homes weren’t built along the courses; instead, modest homes and manicured fairways are separated by roads or thickets of trees. It’s a solidly middle-class neighborhood, says Bob Chandler, an agent with MKB Realtors since 2017 who served in the Roanoke Police Department for nearly 30 years. When homes are listed for sale, they average less than three weeks on the market before they’re snatched up, compared to about a month across the city. "When houses come up there, they go fairly quickly," Chandler says.
The preserve is ideal for family outings and picnics.
The area is close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, perfect for nature lovers.

Teeing off at Ole Monterey and Blue Hills golf courses
There are no parks in the neighborhood, but there are two golf courses. Founded in 1920, Ole Monterey Golf Club is the second-oldest course in the Roanoke Valley. Members of the public can play at Ole Monterey or nearby Blue Hills Golf Club. The latter also sells memberships, which can cost between $450 and $1,600 a year for adults. When locals want to explore the outdoors without golf bags over their shoulders, they can drive 8 miles to Read Mountain Preserve. Five miles of trails carve through the preserve’s forests, and one leads to Read Mountain’s 2,350-foot peak.
Ole Monterey Golf Club is open to the public and has driving ranges and an 18 hole course.
