Former railroad neighborhood adapted to modern living
Mountain View feels like a throwback to the early 20th-century. The neighborhood’s American Foursquare dwellings once housed wealthy railroad executives from the Shenandoah Valley Railroad, and many of these properties still stand. “Roanoke City has older neighborhoods than Roanoke County,” says Roanoke local and REALTOR® Scott Avis with MKB REALTORS®. “A lot of historic properties are still in use, and the people who live in them really value them.” But history extends to more than just housing in Mountain View. The community’s recreation center is within a historic Georgian Revival mansion, and the iconic Salvage Dogs, which reclaims vintage furniture and other household items, backs up to the Roanoke River Greenway. Roanoke local and REALTOR® with MKB REALTORS® Bailey Jenkins says, “[Mountain View] is a very walkable neighborhood. You can go right from Black Dog Salvage to the greenway where you can walk and get coffees or go to eat at a cute local restaurant.”

Black Dog Salvage and The Dog Bowl
Folks might know Black Dog Salvage from the television show “Salvage Dawgs” on the DIY Network, where the store’s owners bid on vintage architectural elements within soon-to-be demolished buildings. This yellow warehouse sells everything from stained glass windows to wrought iron fences to fireplace mantels to locally sourced artwork. Outside sits The Dog Bowl, which lies between the store and the Roanoke River Greenway. “They’ve taken over the entire establishment,” Jenkins says. “It's grown into not only a store but a place to be and enjoy the neighborhood.” This outdoor stage is made from a converted semi-trailer and hosts the annual 5PTS Outdoors Summer Concert Series on Saturdays from May to August. The event space also hosts The Dog Bowl Market on the third Sunday of each month, showcasing local vendors and artisans.

Vic Thomas Park, the Roanoke River Greenway and more
“The best part about the Roanoke River Greenway is that it flows throughout all of Roanoke,” Jenkins says. “It has different little spots and parks that reflect different neighborhood vibes.” Vic Thomas Park sits along Mountain View’s portion of the greenway. Tall grass, wildflowers and sculptures line the walking trail, which loops to nearby Wasena Park. Here, the Herbert Davies Memorial Bridge crosses the Roanoke River, and visitors will see Black Dog Salvage when looking behind them. Recently, the city installed a new bike path, and it’s the only spot along the greenway with exercise equipment. The nearby Mountain View Community Garden is a social center for the neighborhood, where residents can rent a plot of land and grow produce and plants alongside their neighbors. Driving to the garden, residents might pass the Historic Fishburn Mansion, a 42-room Georgian Revival house built in 1907. Once owned by prominent publisher, banker and philanthropist Junius B. Fishburn, the house now serves as the neighborhood’s recreation center.

Early 20th-century architecture
Mountain View showcases some of the city’s best examples of early 20th-century architecture. American Foursquare homes in bright coats of paint and Victorian-style properties with porches sit behind skinny concrete sidewalks. Cars are parked on the curb and above-ground powerlines shade roadsides. The Blue Ridge Mountains are visible from every angle and the air is crisp – like it is throughout all of Roanoke. Potential homebuyers can find a property here for between $110,000 and $420,000, depending on size, age and condition. Sometimes, homes for under $100,000 go onto the market; however, these houses typically require fixing up.

The West End Community Market
The West End Community Market occurs every Wednesday from June to September in the West End Center for Youth’s parking lot. This outdoor farmer’s market has a 100-mile rule, meaning anything sold must originate within 100 miles of the market’s location. Things move inside during the first week of October, and the market continues through the holiday season.

Taco Rojas, Jennifer’s Grocery and the Roanoke Co+op
There’s not much shopping and dining in Mountain View. A few repair shops and mechanics line Campbell Avenue and Lee Highway. The neighborhood’s sole restaurant, Tacos Rojas, is quaint and cozy, serving Mexican food in its yellow interior. Just north of the neighborhood, there are a few markets for a quick grocery run, like Jennifer’s Grocery. But for a weekly grocery run, Roanoke Co+op has a location about a mile south.
