A suburban setting with proximity to downtown Salem
Peachtree-Norwood is a suburban section of northwest Roanoke, defined by brick single-family homes, trimmed lawns and views of the distant Blue Ridge Mountains. Homeowners live on calm streets, surrounded by other houses and the occasional apartment building or church. The neighborhood of about 800 homes borders U.S. Route 460 and Peters Creek Road, which residents can cruise down to run errands or grab a bite to eat. Peachtree-Norwood is on the western edge of the Roanoke-Salem city line, putting homes within 2 miles of the aged brick buildings on Salem’s Main Street. Inside them are boutique shops, antique stores and an assortment of eateries. The neighborhood is also within 5 miles of Hollins University, Roanoke College and LewisGale Medical Center. Those institutions bring employees and students to northwest Roanoke, says Alex Taylor, a Realtor at Mac Westland Real Estate Group. “We get a lot of people who are professors, college students or recent graduates who want to stay in the area,” Taylor says.
Peachtree-Norwood homeowners often have modest yards with plenty of space for fun.
Peachtree-Norwood is about 10 minutes from Downtown Salem, a charming small town.

On the south end of the neighborhood, Due South BBQ has served slow-smoked ribs and chicken since 2007, making its own sweet, spicy and tangy sauces. It’s 2 miles to downtown Salem, where more than a dozen small businesses line East Main Street, including Old Salem Brewing Co. and Wonderous Books & More. Working out on the Lick Run Greenway
Northwest Roanoke is known for its scarcity of parks, but Peachtree-Norwood is only about 2 miles from one of the city’s newest green spaces: Countryside Park. The city opened the park on top of a shuttered golf course in 2014, installing a multistory playground with oversized wind chimes and a swing accessible for children with disabilities. A half-mile section of the Lick Run Greenway starts at Countryside Park, with exercise stations lining the paved trail so users can work out their abs and arms during a walk or jog. There are about 10 churches in and immediately surrounding the neighborhood, representing a variety of denominations. They include St Elias Maronite Catholic Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church, both active since the 1910s. There’s also a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, multiple Baptist congregations and Roanoke Metaphysical Chapel, one of seven United Metaphysical Churches in the U.S. About a mile away is Masjid An-Nur, one of a handful of masjids in Roanoke.
Peachtree-Norwood is close to all of the green spaces the Roanoke has to offer.

Living on Roanoke’s western edge
Housing options are split between single-family homes and apartment communities, the latter concentrated off Route 460 and Cove Road. Minimal traditional houses, ranch-style homes and split-levels are common elsewhere. The small houses average about 1,500 square feet, typically sitting on quarter-acre lots, but home and lot sizes are larger compared to several of the surrounding neighborhoods. Houses back up to thickets of trees, providing backyard shade. They typically have driveways, but sidewalks are uncommon. Homes are likely to cost between $135,000 and $300,000. Several properties on the east end of the neighborhood are in flood zones surrounding Peters Creek. Homebuyers in these areas may be required by their mortgage lenders to buy flood insurance.
