Riverland-Walnut Hill
Turn-of-the-century homes atop hilly terrain
Early 20th-century homes dot Riverland-Walnut Hill’s gridded, sidewalk-lined streets. Stone walls surround American Foursquare houses on hilly, 8,000-square-foot lots. Pink and white dogwood trees shade four-bedroom bungalows. Concrete driveways lead to detached one-car garages sitting behind Dutch Colonial Revivals. “These houses are about a century old,” says Chandler. “Specifically, some of the bungalows may need renovations, but that’s part of the old-timey character that this area is known for.” Houses in Riverland-Walnut Hill may experience flooding as the neighborhood is along the Roanoke River’s southern bank, and streets don’t have gutters. Buying here typically costs between $200,000 and $400,000, a range similar to a Roanoke home’s average $300,000 selling price.Roanoke River Greenway connects waterside parks
Two plastic playgrounds and numerous red maple trees dot Piedmont Park, a pocket green space with access to the paved Roanoke River Greenway. Following the trail west for about a mile leads to River’s Edge Park, a sports complex with 16 tennis courts, three baseball diamonds and five soccer fields. “River’s Edge is one of the most popular parks in the city because it’s where all the youth leagues play over the weekend,” says Chandler. The closest kayak launch is at Smith Park, another mile-long walk south. Monument Trail links several other Mill Mountain Park trails together. For instance, hikers can hop on Star Trail and trek up the mountain’s 1,703-foot-tall peak to reach the Roanoke Star and its sweeping valley views. Woodchip paths weave between waterfalls, black-eyed Susan fields and American Chestnut tree groves at the Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden, also on the loop. Around 85 animals, including red pandas, black bears and snow leopards, roam around their enclosures at the Mill Mountain Zoo towards the park's southernmost end.B grades for Roanoke City Public Schools
Children here can attend Crystal Spring Elementary School, which has a B-plus grade from Niche, and then continue to B-minus-rated James Madison Middle School. Lastly, they may go to B-graded Patrick Henry High School, where Advanced Placement classes include environmental science and calculus.Riverside ice cream and a quick drive to downtown Roanoke
Scoops of hand-crafted ice cream flavors like strawberry balsamic and chocolate chip coffee are served behind the granite counter at Blue Cow Ice Cream Co., a Virginia-local chain in front of the Roanoke River on Piedmont Street. “People get ice cream cones, then eat them on the greenway during the summer,” says Chandler. More restaurants are nearby in downtown Roanoke, including Bread Craft, where patrons enjoy freshly made French pastries and artisanal sandwiches on two-seat bistro tables. Sidewinders is a steakhouse and comfort food spot that transforms into a live country music venue and line dancing club by night. Locals can grab groceries at the Kroger or Fresh Market 2 miles east in the Towers Shopping Center. On Belleview Avenue, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital’s 14-story red-brick building and the all-glass addition have 718 beds, a children’s unit and the region's only Level 1 trauma center. Across several clinics and the downtown campus, Carilion Medical Center provides over 10,000 jobs in Roanoke.Interstate 581 connects to Blacksburg
Though Riverland-Walnut Hill is walkable to Mill Mountain and the Roanoke River, it’s still a car-dependent community. Interstate 581 is immediately west of the neighborhood, making the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport a 6-mile drive north and downtown Blacksburg 40 miles south. Belleview Avenue has several Valley Metro bus stops circulating Route 51/52 from Third Street Station to the Tanglewood Mall. In downtown Roanoke, the Amtrak station follows the Northeast Regional Route to cities like Washington, D.C. and Boston.
