Shenandoah West
Neighborhood in Roanoke, Virginia
Roanoke City County 24017
20th century ranches and Foursquares
Many residents rent units in brick apartment buildings and duplexes that are throughout the neighborhood, but there are also roads lined with single-family homes. Properties have small grass yards with concrete walkways, and most were built between 1920 and 1950. Shenandoah West has a mix of single-story homes like ranches and bungalows, along with two-story properties like American Foursquares and Cape Cods. Homes in need of renovations cost as little as $70,000, but most houses are priced between $140,000 and $220,000.Baseball and basketball at Horton Park
Horton Park offers green space and outdoor recreation. Teenagers meet for basketball games on the courts, and kids practice running the bases on the park’s baseball diamond. Younger kids run around the large, brightly colored playground while their families supervise from shaded benches. Neighbors can gather for picnics or small parties at the covered picnic pavilion. The Melrose Library is also a popular spot for community gatherings with free resources. “The library has a STEAM lab and a sound lab where people can learn new skills,” Montgomery says. The Melrose Library has rooms that residents can reserve for free to host smaller get-togethers, along with shelves of books, study rooms and computers.Educational opportunities in northwest Roanoke
Kids may begin at Hurt Park Elementary School, which has a C rating from Niche. Students can advance to James Madison Middle, which has a B-minus rating and encourages involvement with extracurricular clubs. The school has a Harry Potter club, chess club and yearbook organization. Older students can finish at William Fleming High, which has a C-plus rating. Adults should have access to the free high school to continue their education in Melrose Plaza in 2026.Free themed events at Melrose Library
The Melrose Library organizes programs and community events. “We’ll have dinner and a movie on Wednesday nights and switch up the theme. Recently we’ve done spaghetti, pizza and Chick-fil-A,” Montgomery says. Neighbors can meet at the library for bingo nights and take their kids to story times. The library’s summer reading program engages children through reading challenges and themed events, where they can earn badges throughout the summer. The Roanoke Parks and Recreation department also encourages kids to stay active in the summer with Horton Hoops, an event with free pickup basketball games on Thursday afternoons at Horton Park. Players enjoy music, food and the chance to win prizes at the park.
Valley Metro buses head downtown
Many roads have narrow, cracked sidewalks, so locals can walk to the library or local park. However, not all resources are within a reasonable walking distance. Valley Metro bus stops are on Salem Turnpike and Melrose Avenue; Route 92 takes residents downtown in about 25 minutes. Once downtown, locals can connect with Route 11 to go to the Valley Mall; the whole trip would take about 40 minutes. The Norfolk Southern Railroad Yard operates just to the south of the neighborhood, but residents can travel 3 miles east to downtown Roanoke to board a passenger train. Amtrak operates the Northeast Regional Rail, which goes toward Washington, D.C. and New York City from the downtown station. Those who opt to drive can travel 5 miles west on the Salem Turnpike to go to Salem or link with state routes to merge onto Interstate 581 to travel throughout the greater Roanoke area.Local restaurants in Shenandoah West
The community looks forward to the opening of the Market on Melrose for groceries, but currently, residents grocery shop at Food Lion, which is 2 miles west. There are a couple of grab-and-go convenience stores throughout the area. Restaurants like Shenandoah, a cozy diner offering catfish, wings and music on the weekends, serve the neighborhood. Residents can also go to Hilltop for casual American dishes like burgers and sandwiches for lunch and return to grab a drink and play pool in the evening. Island Jerk is a small carry-out-only spot with authentic Jamaican food, where locals can enjoy oxtail, rice and peas, and plantains. To go retail shopping, residents head up to the Valley View Mall, which is almost 4 miles north. The mall has stores like H&M and Macy’s, and there are big box stores like Walmart and Target near the mall as well.
