Sears catalog housing
“People in the neighborhood take pride in their homes,” Jenkins says. “It’s like owning a piece of history.” West End’s American Foursquare houses sit on gridded streets with cracked sidewalks. Many of these properties are Sears catalog houses with similar designs and layouts. Residential roads are tucked near industrial areas, which can make the area a bit noisy; however, it also means this is a more affordable neighborhood than others in Roanoke. Due to the neighborhood’s railroad history and its rapid need for residential development, most homes here were built in the late 19th- or early 20th-century, with 1905 being the median year built. Potential homebuyers can find a property here for between $110,000 and $350,000, depending on the size, age and condition.Weekends in West End
On the weekends, locals can head to one of the area’s numerous breweries. Blindhouse Beer Company has a baby blue interior and focuses on mixed-culture fermentation. It’s known for serving foam-filled brews, which provide aroma and texture to the drink. Golden Cactus Brewery is another popular spot, with a rotating menu that rarely has the same drink in successive brewing sessions. Inside, there are exposed brick walls and wooden tables, while outdoors, there’s a dog-friendly patio with shaded seating. West End Wednesdays, a mini farmers and artisan market, is held here weekly. The neighborhood is also home to the Jefferson Center, a 1920s theatre that shows live performances, from opera to jazz. And for practicalities, like grocery or clothing shopping, Downtown Roanoke is lined with stores that provide residents with everything they need, like the Roanoke Co+op.West End Park and Wasena Park
West End Park is small and tucked within a residential area. A playground sits in the center of a modest green space, with mature trees dotted throughout. It’s within walking distance from some homes. Kids come here after school to run around the playground and grass or swing on the swing set. For a more scenic outdoor experience, nearby Wasena Park surrounds the Roanoke River, with the paved Roanoke River Greenway running through. It’s secluded; the path meanders past open greenery, tall grass and a mature tree line. There’s also public art along the way – scattered sculptures and colorful murals. An iron bridge along the greenway crosses the rushing river and its rocky shoreline. Another bridge – the Wasena Bridge – casts shadows onto the Roanoke Skate Park beneath it. There’s also a playground, two picnic shelters, a basketball court and a baseball diamond at Wasena Park.Events in nearby Downtown Roanoke
West End is close to all the activities and festivals in Downtown Roanoke that kick off in the spring and go through the fall. The Local Colors Festival celebrates the city’s diversity. It begins with an Opening ceremony and continues with performances and food from all over the globe. GO Fest emphasizes all things outdoors and active. Visitors can try out bikes or watch professionals do their thing at the BMX Bike Show. The festival also encourages visitors to bring their own pint for beer tasting to limit single-use plastic.Getting around West End
The neighborhood is just steps away from Downtown Roanoke's attractions, such as the Virginia Museum of Transportation and the Taubman Museum of Art. To get there by car, Campbell Avenue is the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare. Valley Metro buses lead from the neighborhood throughout the city. The community also borders the Norfolk Southern Railroad Tracks, which can make things noisy. Locals can reach Salem, about 6 miles west, using the Lynchburg Turnpike, or Vinton, about 5 miles east, using Elm Avenue. For a trip out of the mountains, the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport is about 5 miles north.Roanoke City Public Schools
The neighborhood is zoned for Roanoke City Public Schools. Students can attend Wasena Elementary School and James Madison Middle School, which both receive B-minus grades from Niche. They can finish their public education at Patrick Henry High School, which gets a B and offers Dual Enrollment with Virginia Western Community College. The West End Center for Youth is also nearby. The non-profit offers summertime and after-school academic enrichment programs, cultural and arts enrichment and social and emotional programs.
