Home to a 90-year-old civic league
Wildwood's 90-year-old civic league is a testament to the neighborhood’s longstanding status as an active and collaborative community. When the organization was founded in 1934, it was the first in the Roanoke area, says President Chris Craft. Since then, Wildwood has gone from being a rural community east of Roanoke to being absorbed by the city, and U.S. Route 460 on its north side has become a commercial thoroughfare. Still, Wildwood remains a primarily residential neighborhood where people can walk to the park or the creek, and neighbors get along with one another, Craft says. She has lived in Wildwood for 50 years, which doesn’t come close to a record in the neighborhood. “A lot of people have been here longer than I have. They wouldn’t take anything for where they live.”
Antique shops and rice bowls
Craft says one reason she likes the neighborhood is the proximity to a cluster of stores on Route 460. Wildwood homes are no more than a mile from Orange Plaza Shopping Center, where shoppers can go antiquing at Creative Cat Consignment or Roanoke Antique Mall, as well as pick up essentials from Dollar General. In that same shopping center, Agogo scoops rice and noodle bowls. More independent restaurants are a mile away in downtown Vinton, where FarmBurguesa serves burgers made with locally sourced ingredients. There are two grocery stores each about 2 miles away: Kroger on Route 460 and Walmart Neighborhood Market off Dale Avenue.
Dog run, futsal court at Thrasher Park
Homes are within a 15-minute walk of Thrasher Park on the west side of Wildwood. Canines can run around leash-free at the 1-acre Thrasher Dog Park, one of two in Roanoke. In 2023 the city renovated the park’s futsal court, used for a version of soccer played on a hard court instead of grass. Less than a mile south of the neighborhood, bicyclists can use the cyclocross course at Fallon Park. The only permanent cyclocross course in Virginia, it includes trails bikers navigate on two wheels and obstacles they run through on their two feet. At Fallon Park, cyclists and hikers can enter the Tinker Creek Greenway, a paved trail that extends just over a mile to the Roanoke River.
Civic league aims to revive Wildwood events
The COVID-19 pandemic ended the first-responder picnics and other gatherings that used to be common in Wildwood, but the neighborhood is working to start them up again, Craft says. The Wildwood Civic League plans to organize Halloween trunk-or-treating in Thrasher Park that’s accessible for kids with disabilities. As neighborhood events return, locals can head a mile down the road to enjoy festivities in downtown Vinton. Up to 10,000 people turn out for the annual Vinton Dogwood Festival in April. In the 1950s, town residents funded the festival by selling dogwood trees. Today, the parade, live music and petting zoo are funded by sponsorships.
Homes on the edge of Roanoke
Wildwood was part of a chunk of land annexed into the city of Roanoke in the 1970s. After that, more houses were added on the long, straight streets, but it wasn’t turned into a polished subdivision. Many homes lack paved driveways, with homeowners parking cars on gravel or along the street. Ranch homes and minimal traditional designs are typically less than 1,500 square feet, while split-levels and Colonial Revivals are often divided into duplexes. Prices vary from the mid-$100,000s to the mid-$200,000s. The city of Roanoke had a record 31 murders in 2023, but Craft says crime in Wildwood is rare. The city’s crime map shows relatively few reported crimes in the neighborhood compared to communities to the north and southwest. A handful of homes on the west ends of Purcell Avenue and Eastern Avenue are in flood zones along Tinker Creek, so mortgage lenders may require homeowners there to have flood insurance.
Fallon Park Elementary features STEAM lab
Children are less than 2 miles from Fallon Park Elementary School, where Roanoke City Public Schools added a STEAM lab and fine arts wing during multiple phases of construction between 2018 and 2020. The school also hosts the LIFT Center, a clinic where students and their families can get shots, physicals and mental health counseling. Other public school options are John P. Fishwick Middle School and William Fleming High School. All three schools get grades of C-plus from Niche.
Residents can walk to Thrasher Park, Tinker Creek or Orange Plaza
Residents can walk to Thrasher Park, fishing spots along Tinker Creek or the Orange Plaza Shopping Center on the other side of Orange Avenue. However, people typically drive to go beyond the neighborhood, taking Route 460 2 miles to downtown Roanoke or Gus Nicks Boulevard to Vinton. Route 460 is a convenient arterial road, but traffic can move slowly, says Landon Johnson, an agent at Five Stone Realty who is a native of the Roanoke Valley. The Valley Metro bus system stops on Dunkirk and Dale Avenues on its route between downtown Roanoke and Blue Hills Golf Club, but it only arrives at a stop once an hour.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
