Williamson Road
What’s happening along Williamson Road
Williamson Road, where the neighborhood gets its name, is its main thoroughfare, lined with car dealerships, mechanics, shops and restaurants. “Back in the day, Williamson Road was the main place for commerce in Roanoke,” Chandler says. “Now, that’s shifted to the Valley View Mall. It’s still lined with stores, but it’s not a shopping destination; you only go there if you need something there.” Still, there are a few Roanoke main-stays along Williamson Road, like the New Yorker Deli. First opened in 1959 as a stop-and-shop grocery store, the spot quickly became a restaurant because of its popularity. Its deli counter has desserts, meats, cheeses, olives, beer, wine and more. The Filling Station Sports Bar & Grill is another popular spot, where locals sit atop barstools, clink glasses and watch the game or shoot pool. The Valley View Mall, with retailers like Target, Belk and Macy’s, is about 3 miles northwest of the neighborhood. Locals can grocery shop at Kroger or Aldi just north of the mall.Live performances at the Berglund Center
The Berglund Center, formerly the Roanoke Civic Center, opened in 1971. This venue hosts events, from the Miss Virginia pageant to Roanoke Rail Yard Dogs minor-league hockey games. There are two buildings here: the coliseum, which seats 10,500, and the smaller performing arts center, seating just over 2,000. Chandler, who oftentimes sells t-shirts at the venue, says, “The coliseum hosts bigger shows… we’ve had Carrie Underwood, Elton John, but things have started winding down in the past few years. The performing arts center gets smaller shows, and lately, this is where most of the concerts have been. It stays busy a lot.” The Berglund Center opens an ice rink when the weather starts to turn. Families and first dates circle the rink, where there are events like Halloween costume dress-up days and food drives.Modest homes a few blocks from commerce
“Two or three blocks from Williamson Road, you’ll find tree-lined streets,” Chandler says. “You can hear the interstate and Williamson Road, but you don’t sense it. The neighborhood feels separate.” The area was mainly developed following World War II, and its housing and layout reflect this. Homes and lots are compact, streets follow a gridded pattern and residential roads lack a commercial presence. Common home styles include Cape Cod, ranch-style and American Foursquare. Potential homebuyers can find a property in the area for between $130,000 and $270,000, depending on size, age and condition.Roanoke City Public Schools
The neighborhood is zoned for Roanoke City Public Schools. Students can attend Lincoln Terrace Elementary and Lucy Addison Middle, which both receive C grades from Niche. They can finish their public education at William Fleming High School, which gets a C-plus and offers many clubs, including an Air Force JROTC program.Bowman Park and Eastgate Park
Bowman Park on Meadows Street is a mid-sized park within walking distance of some homes. Here, kids run around on the playground, and families gather at the picnic shelter. An open green space has enough room for a soccer game. Nearby Eastgate Park offers a more expansive outdoor experience, spanning nearly 60 acres. The park roughly contours Tinker Creek, with the nearly 3-mile Tinker Creek Trail following the water. This is a popular spot for birding and fishing, and visitors often see yellow-crowned night herons nesting near grassy shorelines.Getting around Williamson Road
Williamson Road is the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare. It links with U.S. Interstate 81, which leads west to Blacksburg and Christiansburg. U.S. Interstate 581 encompasses the neighborhood’s western border and also links to I-81, allowing for travel throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains. Valley Metro buses run along Williamson Road, leading locals all over the city. When it’s time to fly, the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport is about 3 miles north. “The airport doesn’t really make things noisy,” Chandler says. “Our airport stays busy, but it’s nothing outrageous – you won’t be turning your volume up and down because of planes.”
