Wilmont
Neighborhood in Roanoke, Virginia
Roanoke City County 24017
1960s homes on sloped roads
1962 is the median year Wilmont’s homes were constructed, and the area embodies a neighborhood from this time. The streets lack sidewalks and are wide enough to accommodate cars parked on either side – where many are, even though most homes have driveways and covered carports. Ranch-styles, bilevels and a few Cape Cods sit up and down the Wilmont’s gentle hills. Potential homebuyers can find a property here for between $115,000 and $220,000, with the size and condition being the biggest contributors to price variation.Commerce along Shenandoah Avenue
A Food Lion grocery store sits in Wilmont’s southwest corner. In the same shopping center, there’s a Family Dollar, a Subway and a few other businesses. A few modest markets where residents can grab quick snacks line Shenandoah Avenue NW. For a larger shopping trip, downtown Roanoke is about 4 miles east, while downtown Salem is about 4 miles west. There are a few houses of worship throughout the neighborhood as well, like The Hill Church and the Masjid An-Nur Islamic Center.
What’s happening at Strauss Park
Strauss Park sits within walking distance of some homes. When parking, visitors will see Sycamore trees lining the north side and the sun shining on shadeless grass. Dense trees grow on the south side, where Peters Creek runs through. A picnic shelter and a playground lay at the top of the park. Then, there are tennis and basketball courts where people play pickup games. Youth sports leagues like the Virginia Hellcats occasionally use the park for practices and tryouts.Getting around Wilmont
Peters Creek Road, one of Roanoke’s main thoroughfares, runs along the neighborhood’s western border and leads north, towards the U.S. Interstate 581 interchange. Valley Metro buses along Shenandoah Avenue NW and Westwood Boulevard NW lead throughout the city via public transit. Shenandoah Avenue also leads east towards downtown and west towards Salem. In case of emergency, the Carillion Roanoke Community Hospital is about 5 miles west. To leave the Blue Ridge and start a journey to someplace else, locals can head to the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport, about 4 miles northeast.College credit at Patrick Henry High School
Students are zoned for Roanoke City Public Schools. They can attend Fairview Elementary School and Woodrow Wilson Middle School, which both receive C-plus scores from Niche. Fairview Elementary is on Westwood Boulevard, and this is a neighborhood where parents can walk their children to school. Students can finish their public education at Patrick Henry High School, which earns a B from Niche and offers Dual Enrollment with Virginia Western Community College.
