Small-town living in rural Berks County

Robesonia gets its name from Henry P. Robeson, who founded the town in 1845 around an iron production business. The iron furnace was dismantled in the early 1900s, but the residential center remained, forming this quaint borough of western Berks County. Robesonia today has a population of 2,000 people and is located at the center of the Heidelberg township. "The area has a laid-back small-town vibe," says Leah Ruth, the Youth Services Coordinator at the local library. "We are in the rural land that separates Reading and Lebanon, close to both farm produce stands and city activity." With farmland to the north and forest to the south, Robesonia is a pocket of residential life with a peaceful natural backdrop.

Twentieth-century properties

American Foursquare homes built around the turn of the 20th century line the streets and cost just over $200,000. Residents of these properties step out of their front door right onto sidewalks and tend to park along the street. Off the main roads, lot sizes increase to a quarter acre, and homes include attached garages. Mid-century ranch-style homes start at just under $200,000 but can get up to $300,000 for half-acre lots or more contemporary styles.

Local restaurants and thrifty shopping

The center of town is filled with quaint local shops and restaurants. The Henry P. Robeson House is known for its barbecue, serving classic American fare in the oldest standing building in town, dating back to 1820. With several beers on tap and sports playing on big screens, it's a popular spot to meet friends. Down the street, Ozgood's Grill and Bar has a similar vibe and hosts monthly specials with unique holiday menus. "When it comes to our local businesses, I think of Lori's Candy Station," Ruth says. "The shop sells homemade chocolates and ice cream, and the owner does a lot for the community." Residents can pick up essentials at the Dollar Tree, and those who love thrift store bargains can head to Goodwill and the locally-owned Thrifty Mike's.

Churches in the area host programs that offer free meals and children's clothing to families in need. The Robesonia Community Library has preschool reading groups, an LGBT teen club and small vendor events for local artists. And the whole community comes together in the last week of June for the Robesonia Street Fair, which includes live music, food vendors, carnival rides and a fireworks show.

Walk to local schools

Students in Robesonia are part of the Conrad Weiser Area School District. They start at Conrad Weiser East Elementary, which gets a B-plus rating from Niche, before moving on to Conrad Weiser Middle, which is rated C-plus. As a culmination of a year of environmental learning, sixth graders at the middle school look forward to a weeklong residential field trip up into Blue Mountain. Conrad Weiser High, rated B, has a state-recognized music program and offers advanced courses in engineering, programming and healthcare at the Berks Career & Technology Center. The middle and high school are within walking distance of many homes in the area.

Playgrounds, pools and popular fishing spots

At the heart of the neighborhood, Robesonia Park offers a playground and a picnic pavilion that locals can reserve for events. The Conrad Weiser Community Pool is another activity hub with summer swim lessons and open pool parties. Residents can take a twenty-minute drive to visit Blue Marsh Lake, a popular hiking and fishing spot. But right in Robesonia's backyard, Furnace Creek is also a popular place to catch some trout.

And then, when you see the view for the first time, you will fall in love. It is a breathtaking panoramic view of Pennsylvania farmland. Honestly, it looks like a living postcard.
