Residential streets a few blocks north of downtown
In the summer, Minnesotans look forward to kayak rentals, family picnics and tandem bike rides beside Rochester's Silver Lake. Goose Egg Park fills with a few hundred residents for LoToFest in August, a day organized by the Lowertown neighborhood association. There's music, dunk tanks, face painting and cold cups of lemonade beside the playground. Wintertime, on the contrary, means single-digit temperatures and ice; Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike swim slowly beneath the surface, biding their time until fishermen return come thaw. Directly north of Downtown Rochester's network of shopping plazas, hotels and Mayo Clinic buildings, Lowertown is mostly residential with the exception of Broadway Avenue dining and consignment shops. Streets are wide, flat, and cracked from decades of snow plows and salt. According to Nathaniel Nelson, a co-owner at Pop's Art Theater, businesses are used to a mix of year-rounders and "transitive people," or "Mayo Clinic Patients and their families who come through on a regular basis." They sit shoulder-to-shoulder, ordering cheesy omelets at Cheap Charlies, playing pool at North Star and watching the latest Indie release on 6th Avenue.

100-year-old homes on sidewalk-lined streets
"A lot of [the houses] are smaller and older. A lot of them were built just before the Depression, and many are well over 100 years old," says Joe Sveen, a Commercial Sales and Leasing Advisor with Realty Group Inc. Some even date back to around the time of the Mayo Clinic's founding in 1889. Prospective buyers will find bungalows, cottages, and American Foursquares, which range from around $150,000 to upwards of $350,000. Some properties have rental certificates, and investors lease rooms to Mayo Clinic patients and their families in town for long-term treatments. Sidewalks line both sides of the street, and compact lot sizes mean that driveways are often shared. Along with fast-casual restaurants, Broadway Avenue is also home to a few multi-story apartment complexes.
Homes in Lowertown vary in size and price, but all offer private driveways.

Broadway Avenue bakeries, ramen and dive bars
Businesses in Lowertown are mainly concentrated along Broadway Avenue; there's a mix of laundromats, gas stations and chains like McDonald's and Taco Bell. Morning commuters pick up cream cheese scones and fresh loaves of honey whole wheat at Great Harvest Bread Co., and Taco Mi Pueblo sells tortas from a bright yellow trailer in the parking lot. Order spicy ramen to go from Pho Chau up the street. Locals park their motorcycles outside Northstar Bar, which has weighty beer steins, live music on Fridays and Saturdays and neighborhood dart leagues. Groceries are less than a mile away at Silver Lake Foods. On 6th Avenue, find vintage albums at Hidden World Vinyl Records or attend a signing at Garden Party Books next to Pop's. Downtown, shops and restaurants are connected to Mayo Clinic offices and the University of Minnesota's Rochester headquarters through a web of skywalks and underground tunnels (aka the Rochester "subway").

Rochester's live theater scene and 'Thursdays Downtown’
Some LowTo locals invest in season passes to watch musicals and plays at the Rochester Repertory Theatre, where auditions are open to the public. There's also a packed calendar of live shows at the Rochester Civic Theatre, connected to the Mayo Civic Center and Eagle Brook Church. Pop's, meanwhile, screens arthouse movies and documentaries for small audiences off 6th Avenue. "We have members who show up multiple times a month to almost every film we play," says Nelson, adding, "There's a lot of support here for the arts, whether that be film, music or theater." On Thursdays during the summer, food vendors and craftsmen set up booths in Peace Plaza for "Thursdays Downtown," and local bands perform midday and evening sets. Other Downtown Rochester events include Social-ICE in the plaza and ball games in Mayo Field.

A neighborhood festival in Goose Egg Park and boat rentals beside Silver Lake
Goose Egg Park, which first hosted LoToFest in August of 2023, is also popular for its playground and pickleball courts. There are paved trails beside the water in Silver Lake Park, and summer days are spent renting canoes, kayaks or even electric paddleboats. Migrating geese — and local families — enjoy spending time in the park's open fields, and a pedestrian bridge connects to a skate park and public swimming pool. On select evenings throughout the summer, head to Central Park for free "Fresh Air Fitness" classes.

Downtown subways and skyways
Downtown Rochester is just a few blocks north of Lowertown, and many Mayo Clinic employees will walk or bike to work in the morning. According to Andrew Atwood of Century 21, the city is "pushing very hard to make it more walkable and bike-friendly for [Mayo Clinic] employees needing to get access to their building without the ability to park or drive there." He also points to the network of skyways and underground subways connecting downtown buildings, and there's a shuttle service that transports patients and doctors between Saint Mary's, the hospital's Methodist Campus and the Gonda Building. According to Atwood, the city's bus lines are mainly occupied by Mayo employees; over 40,000 Rochesterians work for the clinic. 10 miles from Lowertown along U.S. Highway 63 is the city's small international airport, which offers direct flights to Minneapolis and Chicago. It takes an hour and a half to reach the Twin Cities along U.S. Highway 52.
