Meadow Park
Ranch-style and split-level houses on sidewalk-lined streets
"Most houses in Meadow Park are likely going be ranch-style, and there are some splits and two-stories," says Jones, adding that lot sizes generally range from around two-tenths to three-tenths of an acre. There's enough space for small garden plots and back decks. Prices hover between the mid-$200,000s and the mid-$300,000s, although New Traditional homes built within the last few years can occasionally reach upwards of $400,000. Streets are wide and gently curved, and detached garages posted with basketball hoops sit at the end of narrow driveways.Neighborhood public schools, community mentorships and classes at RCTC
Many of the students living in Meadow Park are within walking distance of public schools like Franklin Elementary, which earns a B-minus Niche grade, Willow Creek Middle, which has a C-plus and the A-minus-rated Mayo High, which has a graduation rate of close to 95%. In their Junior and Senior years, Mayo students have the opportunity to gain career experience through community mentorships, and Jones also points to the proximity of Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC), where high schoolers can earn simultaneous college credit. Through Family Service Rochester, specifically the Meadow Park Initiative, it's free for kids in Kindergarten through sixth grade to attend summer enrichment classes. Program options include STEM, nature and sports.Malls, big-box retail and barbecue joints within 2 miles
According to Jones, "There is a lot of shopping that's near ya, when you live in Meadow Park." The Apache Mall, which houses over 100 retail and restaurant options—everything from SEPHORA to American Eagle—is about 2 miles away. Shoppers can pick up groceries at the nearby Trader Joe's, or head for a sit-down Italian dinner at Sorellina's, which has been a staple for pasta dishes in Rochester for the last 30 years. Directly west of Meadow Park, Broadway Avenue is lined with fast-casual stops like Mi Oaxaqueña Taquería, a brightly painted taco truck that parks next to the Hampton Inn, and John Hardy's BBQ, which has been perfecting their apple wood smoke strategies since the 1970s. At Danielle's Consignment Boutique, residents can sell and shop for gently-warn clothing items, and big box retail options down the street include Walmart Supercenter, Michael's and Menards.Park murals, basketball courts and playgrounds
Along with sponsoring summertime youth enrichment programs, the Meadow Park Initiative has also worked to update Friendship Park facilities. In 2020, a mural celebrating the neighborhood's diversity was painted next to the park's brand-new basketball court and swingsets. The playground at Meadow Park Estates Park, meanwhile, has climbing walls and field space for frisbee games. In Smekta Park, paved trails border Bear Creek wildlife. "Not too far from Meadow Park, there're several different golf options," adds Jones, highlighting Soldiers Field Golf Course, which is intersected by the Zumbro River. The nearby public swimming pool typically opens in June, and hockey players can head to the Soldiers Field Skate rink in the winter. The Olmsted County Fair and an annual farmers market
The Olmsted County Fair has been taking place annually in Graham Park since the early 1900s when the Mayo Clinic was still relatively young. For a week in late July—sometimes early August—Rochesterians stop by the grounds to enjoy carnival rides, fried dough and barn shows, an opportunity for local farmers to show off their livestock. "We have a world-famous corn cob water tower right on the fairgrounds," says Jones, adding, "There is also a farmers market year round that's every Saturday at the fairgrounds." Visitors enjoy live music, fresh-made pies, potted plants and seasonal produce.Commuting to the Mayo Clinic via car, bus or bike
According to Jones, Meadow Park's proximity to the Mayo Clinic's Methodist and St. Mary's campuses is, at least in part, what makes it a coveted neighborhood. "You're 5-10 minutes from Mayo [by car]," says the Realtor, adding, "The public transit is not too far away at all. It's a few blocks on foot. There's also satellite parking." Public buses stop along thoroughfares like 8th Avenue and 3rd Avenue on their way downtown, and a free shuttle service travels regularly between hospital campuses. The city also has an ever-expanding network of paved trails, and some will even ride their bikes to work in an effort to avoid parking downtown. Rochester's international airport, about 8 miles from Meadow Park, offers flights to larger travel hubs like Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul. Depending on traffic along U.S. Highway 52, driving the 90 miles to the Twin Cities can take about an hour and a half.
