Corn Hill
The Corn Hill Neighborhood Association fosters community outreach
Locals here make their voices heard through the Corn Hill Neighborhood Association, which organizes huge events like the Corn Hill Arts Festival and collaborates with the city government on community-related development projects. “The development committee invested $40,000 in doing a charter ten years ago, and we presented it to the state of New York; they were so impressed they gave us 6 million dollars of money to develop the river walk,” says Sarkis. “So the neighborhood is primarily responsible for all the development between the Interstate 490 bridge to the Susan B. Anthony Bridge and the Ford Street Bridge.” The Corn Hill Arts Festival is the neighborhood's main event and draws visitors from all over the city. With its food, drinks and artisan craft booths, it's a huge boost to the local economy. “The festival started in 1968 with two vendors. The idea in the beginning was to bring people into the neighborhood,” says Sarkis. “We [now] have 300 volunteers, and we'll make fifty to $100,000, depending on the year and what's going on. Those monies are invested and used for events.” There’s also the Clarissa Street Reunion, a day of jazz, gospel and R&B live performances and an annual tradition since 1998. The reunion celebrates the predominantly Black community on Clarissa Street, known for the many jazz musicians who came out of the area from the 1940s through the ‘80s.Historic homes and charitable causes in Corn Hill
With two historic districts — the Third Ward National Register District and the Corn Hill Preservation District — Corn Hill has wide-ranging architectural styles and renovated homes from the late 19th and early 20th century. The primary housing types are multifamily options, such as apartments, duplexes and colonial townhouses. Single-family housing styles mainly include Colonial Revivals, Foursquares and Craftsman bungalows, but others are scattered throughout the neighborhood, including Queen Annes and Second Empires. Prices range from around $200,000 through $370,000. Homebuyers in Corn Hill can find a two-bedroom townhouse on the river with a courtyard for $225,000, with prices increasing to $355,000 for a three-bedroom colonial four square with wood flooring. Corn Hill is also a community of charity in the greater Rochester area. “We just invited a center for individuals who have been evicted from their apartments or had to leave. It's been run by the Volunteers of America, and we were approached about a year ago; the neighborhood embraced the idea,” says Sarkis. “We also now have a refugee not-for-profit organization in the neighborhood that services families who need placement. When people move to the neighborhood, they know that, so they must be open and comfortable with that.” The Moving Forward Family Shelter is within Corn Hill and offers housing and kitchen services for unhoused families.Lunsford Circle Park and the Genesee River
City parks are one of the defining features of Corn Hill. Lunsford Circle Park is a shady green space central to the area. The park is a popular place for locals to read a book, connect with nature or attend a community gathering, and it offers a bench, swings and a gazebo. Named after a local artist, Ralph Avery Park allows visitors to walk a jagged sidewalk path bordered by trees, park benches and plaques with interesting facts. Residents can play basketball, swim laps in the pool or take classes at the Adams Street Recreation Center. Outdoor enthusiasts can kayak on the Genesee River or take a boat tour with Riverie Tour Boat, a business operating in Corn Hill Landing. Locals also benefit from the city’s ROC the Riverway Project, which has renovated park infrastructure along the river. The riverway trail’s paved walking and biking paths head north to downtown and south toward the University of Rochester. People in Corn Hill are less than a mile from Blue Cross Arena, which hosts home games for the Rochester Amerks hockey team and the Rochester Knighthawks lacrosse team. Potential homebuyers should be advised that Corn Hill has a 7 out of 10 score on the CAP Crime Index. The neighborhood collaborates with the Rochester Police Department through the organization Police And Citizens Together Against Crime.Folks dine Downtown or at Corn Hill Landing
With its central location, Corn Hill is only a couple of miles from the dining options in downtown Rochester. Just northeast, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que serves smoked meats, including beef brisket, barbecue ribs and mac and cheese, in a lively brewpub setting. It's a popular stop for fans heading to or from games at Blue Cross Arena. Though no large supermarkets are within Corn Hill, residents can get on Interstate 490 and drive to Aldi, Wegmans, or the local Abundance Food Co-op, which are all within about 4 miles. The newer mixed development of Corn Hill Landing gives the community a small commercial corridor that has spots like Mac’s Philly Steaks. Flight Wine Bar serves charcuterie boards and aged cheese platters with a curated wine selection and a soundtrack of jazz music. Sarkis also mentions that “we have a lot of potluck dinners in our neighborhood; folks often go to their neighbors' houses for dinner.”Rochester Early College International High is unique in the city
Corn Hill is in the Rochester City School District’s South Zone, so kids can attend George Mather Forbes School No.4, serving kindergarten through 6th grade, and Dr. Alice Holloway Young School Of Excellence for middle school education. Both schools get an overall C-minus grade from Niche. Rochester Early College International High School is rated a B-plus and is the only school in the Rochester City School District with the Early College model, so students can gain up to 60 college credits before graduation.RTS transit, Rochester Airport and I-490
The Regional Transit Service bus system makes nine stops along Ford Street on Corn Hill’s western border, giving neighborhood residents easy routes to other parts of the city. The neighborhood is only 4 miles from Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport for domestic and international flights. Major highways are nearby, including I-490, which goes west toward Niagara Falls and east toward Syracuse. It’s also becoming more common to walk or bike to neighboring communities like South Wedge, Plymouth–Exchange and the University of Rochester thanks to the Genesee Riverway Trail.
