History in the heart of Rochester

Bordering the historic district of Corn Hill and the Susan B. Anthony neighborhood, Mayor’s Heights has a long history in the heart of Rochester. Mayor’s Heights is a quiet, walkable neighborhood next to various famed establishments, restaurants and museums. “We have the river, we have an infrastructure that takes care of issues and we have homes that would be worth a million dollars in another city,” says Christopher Thomas, a Rochester native with over 30 years of experience as the Owner and Broker of New 2 U Homes LLC. “Rochester is an amazing place to be.”

Colonial bungalows and new development

Homes sit on modest lots by shady streets with sidewalks in Mayor’s Heights, and the median year homes were built was 1900, which provides the neighborhood with a variety of older residences and newly renovated homes with a rich history. Single-family homes make up 21% of the housing stock in Mayor’s Heights, while multifamily homes, duplexes, and apartment buildings make up the majority. The average home price falls between $60,000 - $180,000. Potential homebuyers can find a 3-bedroom bungalow with a full attic for $72,000, with prices increasing to $160,000 for a 3-bedroom colonial bungalow with hardwood flooring.

With the residential development of multiple new apartment complexes and the restoration of older residences, this neighborhood has a lot of potential. “More investors are flocking to Mayor’s Heights because the prices are much lower than in neighborhoods like Corn Hill,” says Thomas. “It’s definitely a neighborhood experiencing upward mobility, and the new properties there are going to benefit the surrounding communities.”

Nick Tahou Hots "Garbage Plates" and the 1872 Café

Nick Tahou Hots is an iconic Rochester establishment, serving “garbage plates,” which are ground cheeseburgers over a bed of home fries and macaroni salad. The restaurant opened in 1918, and its culinary creations have been a must-try ever since. Across the street from the Susan B. Anthony Museum is the 1872 Café, which has pizza, soups, and salads with a gluten-free menu. There are plenty of locally owned convenience stores to try out in a pinch. Locals can step into the corner store, Goldstar Meat Market Inc., for meat, snacks and prepackaged goods. ALDI is two miles north on Lake Avenue, and Tops Friendly Markets is only a mile west on West Avenue for all the supermarket essentials.
