Upper Monroe
Locals get wings from Jeremiah's Tavern
Jeremiah's Tavern has been a neighborhood institution since 1978 and offers award-winning hot wings to pair with a selection of draft beers. Blaine recommends The Cubroom, an American restaurant where dishes are inspired by the changing seasons in a rustic, speakeasy-style environment. The restaurant's vegan options are a popular choice here. A few blocks north of Upper Monroe is Culver Road Armory, a small shopping center featuring a West Elm for furnishings and a local clothing shop called Peppermint. Just a mile southeast in Brighton is the 12 Corners Plaza, a triangular urban island formed by the intersection of Elmwood Avenue, Monroe Avenue and South Winton Road, which creates twelve corners and hosts a hub of commercial businesses. There are boutiques like Thomas Clothier for men's clothing and diners like Seasoning Thai Bistro for spicy drunken noodles. There's a Wegmans and an ALDI for groceries just 2 miles away on East Avenue.Multi-family homes up north, and single-family options to the south
Home values in Upper Monroe range from $225,000 to over $575,000, varying by age and square footage. "The mix of housing in Upper Monroe leads to higher renters compared to Swillburg," says Andrew Hannan, a Rochester local and Realtor with Keller Williams. "There's way more multi families in Upper Monroe, they even have apartment buildings with 40 tenants in them." The north end of Upper Monroe is filled with apartment buildings, multi-family homes and duplexes in colonial and Foursquare styles, mainly built in the early 1900s through the '20s. Further south are single-family ramblers and split-level homes built after World War II. Single-family homes here are usually between 1,500 and 1,700 square feet in size. Streets are compact and lined with trees, and most homes come with paved driveways instead of garages.Neighbors can hike up Pinnacle Hill from home
Upper Monroe features Pinnacle Hill, Rochester's highest peak. It is just one of five hills in the Pinnacle Range that cradles the city to the south. Pinnacle Hill features bike trails and is accessible from many homes in the neighborhood. Cobb's Hill Park is next in the Pinnacle Range, just blocks from Upper Monroe. It's a massive green space spanning 109 acres. It has remained largely untouched by major developments like the Erie Canal and Interstate 490 construction, making it a natural oasis among urban development. The park offers walking trails and one of the city's best skyline views. Other amenities include fields for baseball and soccer, tennis and basketball courts and a playground. Folks also do cross-country skiing here during the snowy Rochester winters, where the average snowfall is between 70 and 120 inches. As Interstate 490 was developed in the late 2000s, a small 1-acre parcel near the highway was left unused by the state Department of Transportation, and the Upper Monroe Neighborhood Association quickly turned it into Wide Water Gardens, the city's largest community garden. It's a popular attraction for locals and consists of 50 rentable plots to plant bright flowers or fresh produce.Local events at Rochester Museum & Science Center
A mile north of home is the Rochester Museum & Science Center, or RMSC, which hosts exhibits like Wonder of Waters or The Changemakers: Rochester Women Who Changed the World. This museum also has other events like Sensory Sundays for all ages and abilities and Deaf Night at the RMSC, a deaf and hard-of-hearing-friendly experience with extended museum hours and an ASL instructor. Seasonal entertainment can be found up the street at the Corn Hill Arts Festival, an annual two-day event featuring artists and musicians from across the country that stretches across nine streets.James Monroe High has educated youth for over 100 years
Upper Monroe falls within the Rochester City School District's South Zone. Many students are within walking distance of Pinnacle School No. 35, which welcomes kindergarten through sixth graders at the corner of Field Street and Pinnacle Road. A little farther west, Anna Murray-Douglass Academy accommodates pre-K through eighth grade. Both schools are rated a C-minus overall on Niche. Meanwhile, older students are within five minutes of the C-rated James Monroe High School, which has served the community for over a century.Close to I-490, East Avenue or Monroe Avenue for Rochester buses
Upper Monroe is a very convenient location for most of Rochester's points of interest. The nightlife and major employers downtown are a 2-mile drive on I-490, which takes about five to ten minutes, while retail in Brighton or East Avenue is about the same distance. "It is great for renters without cars [because] the buses run down Monroe Avenue at a fairly regular pace, usually every 15 minutes," says Hannan. Rochester RTS buses can take locals downtown and have several stops along Monroe Avenue. Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport is an 8-mile drive from home.
