Historic and neighborly community in the Quad Cities

Keystone borders the Mississippi River to the north and sits right between the two downtowns of Rock Island and Moline, while adjacent to Augustana College. This Rock Island neighborhood features century-old houses with a wide variety of architectural styles. Neighbors work hard to maintain their homes and foster a welcoming community. “Our neighborhood was very involved and civic-minded,” says Constance King, who grew up in the neighborhood from 1984 to 1995 and is the office manager at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Keystone. “My mom was involved in the Community Caring Conference, which helped improve Rock Island neighborhoods. And my grandma created Keep Rock Island Beautiful, which was to pick up litter. I don’t live there anymore, but you can tell people still take care of the neighborhood.” Lincoln Park sits roughly in the center of Keystone, where the community gathers during the summer for concerts and Greek plays. The neighborhood is also just a walk across the bridge to an island with trails in the middle of the Mississippi River.

Diverse early 1900s houses

Keystone’s numbered, grid-pattern streets, some of which are still paved with original red brick, are lined with houses built between the early 1900s and 1950s. “The homes are really different and cool, a lot of them came from Sears kits,'' says King, referring to the once-ubiquitous retailer's Modern Homes program, which sold home-construction kits through a mail-order catalog from 1908 to around 1942. "They're not cookie-cutter. They’re so beautiful and different.” While each house has its own unique characteristics, there are some common architectural themes, including Craftsman-style bungalows, Queen Annes with rounded walls and turrets and boxy American Foursquares. Many of these homes have wide front porches and detached garages that are accessible from a back alleyway. They’re typically 1,000 to 2,000 square feet in size. With renovations, they range from around $150,000 to $250,000. Those in need of some work sell between $30,000 and $130,000.

Summer concerts and Greek plays at Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park opened to the public in 1909 on Abraham Lincoln’s 100th birthday. The historic park is situated on the Indian Boundary Line, with a commemorative plaque. The hilly, 22-acre park has a walkway that weaves more than a half-mile through mature woodlands to a playground, picnic shelters and a gazebo. A wading pool was built in 1930 with a pool house on one side and a semi-circle of Greek columns on the other side. Though the pool closed in the 1940s, the Genesius Guild began using the space in the 1950s, converting the pool house into a Renaissance-style theatre and adding bleachers between the Greek columns. The group continues to put on free Greek and Shakespearean productions for eight straight weeks during the summer. “We rewrite the Greek comedies because they were funny back in the day but not so much today,” says Doug Tschopp, who has been the executive director of the Genesius Guild for more than 20 years. “People really get into it. The typical audience is 150 to 200 people. And during rehearsals, we’ll always see kids in the park coming up to watch.” There’s also a bandshell about 500 feet away, where people go for the Starlight Revue Concert Series, another free summer series event. Part of the Great River Trail runs along the Mississippi River through Sylvan Island Gateway Park. As the park’s name suggests, a pedestrian bridge crosses the river to Sylvan Island. A 1.24-mile trail goes through a thick forest and wraps around the entire island with fishing piers, picnic shelters and river overlooks along the way.

Mexican restaurants and other local businesses

Keystone has a few stores and restaurants on Sixth Avenue to the north and 14th Avenue to the south. On Sixth Avenue, there’s Old Mexico Restaurant, part of the D’Lua chain, which has different types of Mexican establishments all over the Quad Cities region. Imperial Grocery Store is just down the street, which sells Mexican produce and also has a restaurant section. On 14th Avenue, La Rancherita Restaurant gives locals another option for Mexican food. They can also hit up Harris Pizza #2 for a Quad Cities-style pizza, which is cut into long rectangular strips. Those who like to stay up late head to Tim’s Corner Tap or across the street to Quarter-Til Tap, two bars that stay open past midnight every day. For everyday shopping needs, it’s less than a 2-mile drive to Hy-Vee grocery store and Aldi.
