Keystone
Suburban Neighborhood in Rock Island, Illinois
Rock Island County 61201
Diverse early 1900s houses
Keystone’s numbered, grid-pattern streets, some of which are still paved with original red brick, are lined with houses built between the early 1900s and 1950s. “The homes are really different and cool, a lot of them came from Sears kits,'' says King, referring to the once-ubiquitous retailer's Modern Homes program, which sold home-construction kits through a mail-order catalog from 1908 to around 1942. "They're not cookie-cutter. They’re so beautiful and different.”While each house has its own unique characteristics, there are some common architectural themes, including Craftsman-style bungalows, Queen Annes with rounded walls and turrets and boxy American Foursquares. Many of these homes have wide front porches and detached garages that are accessible from a back alleyway. They’re typically 1,000 to 2,000 square feet in size. With renovations, they range from around $150,000 to $250,000. Those in need of some work sell between $30,000 and $130,000.
Summer concerts and Greek plays at Lincoln Park
Lincoln Park opened to the public in 1909 on Abraham Lincoln’s 100th birthday. The historic park is situated on the Indian Boundary Line, with a commemorative plaque. The hilly, 22-acre park has a walkway that weaves more than a half-mile through mature woodlands to a playground, picnic shelters and a gazebo. A wading pool was built in 1930 with a pool house on one side and a semi-circle of Greek columns on the other side. Though the pool closed in the 1940s, the Genesius Guild began using the space in the 1950s, converting the pool house into a Renaissance-style theatre and adding bleachers between the Greek columns. The group continues to put on free Greek and Shakespearean productions for eight straight weeks during the summer. “We rewrite the Greek comedies because they were funny back in the day but not so much today,” says Doug Tschopp, who has been the executive director of the Genesius Guild for more than 20 years. “People really get into it. The typical audience is 150 to 200 people. And during rehearsals, we’ll always see kids in the park coming up to watch.” There’s also a bandshell about 500 feet away, where people go for the Starlight Revue Concert Series, another free summer series event.Part of the Great River Trail runs along the Mississippi River through Sylvan Island Gateway Park. As the park’s name suggests, a pedestrian bridge crosses the river to Sylvan Island. A 1.24-mile trail goes through a thick forest and wraps around the entire island with fishing piers, picnic shelters and river overlooks along the way.

Keystone has a few stores and restaurants on Sixth Avenue to the north and 14th Avenue to the south. On Sixth Avenue, there’s Old Mexico Restaurant, part of the D’Lua chain, which has different types of Mexican establishments all over the Quad Cities region. Imperial Grocery Store is just down the street, which sells Mexican produce and also has a restaurant section. On 14th Avenue, La Rancherita Restaurant gives locals another option for Mexican food. They can also hit up Harris Pizza #2 for a Quad Cities-style pizza, which is cut into long rectangular strips.
