Longview
A variety of homes from the turn of the 20th century
“Longview has homes that were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, so Victorian-style houses are sprinkled throughout the area,” says Shelly Phares, a local Realtor with Ruhl & Ruhl Realtors. “The homes are more affordable than other areas because of the age of the houses.” Along with Victorian architecture, Longview’s grid-pattern streets are lined with American Foursquares and smaller bungalows. Homes are built close together on lots of about a tenth of an acre, allowing for small front yards and narrow, fenced-in backyards. Residents can park on the street or in a back alleyway, where there is typically a detached garage. Most houses have two to four bedrooms and around 1,500 to 2,000 square feet of living space. Move-in-ready homes start at around $60,000 for those without the latest modifications. They sell for as high as $130,000 with brand-new renovations. Meanwhile, houses in need of work range from $18,000 to $50,000.Distant views and water slides at Longview Park
Neighbors have been visiting Longview Park for more than 115 years. “There’s a bottom and top portion of the park,” says Brooks, “and there’s a distinct view from on top of the hill that people appreciate.” A bike path starts at the top of the hill next to the beach volleyball and pickleball courts, zig-zagging all the way down, then passing a basketball court and playground at the bottom. There’s also a railroad-themed water park called Whitewater Junction, featuring four water slides, and a conservatory, where residents have been growing plants since 1937. The hill itself serves as a winter attraction for sledding. The neighborhood organization, Friends of Longview, works to maintain the park. “They have a deep connection to the park,” says Brooks. “We’re actually working with them on a tree-equity program. We planted 13 trees in 2024, and we’re looking to plant more in 2025.” The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center supports the neighborhood by providing free after-school programs and summer camps, family counseling and other services.Diversity at Rock Island schools
Students may attend Rock Island Academy, which earns a C from Niche. They’ll go on to Washington Junior High, graded a B-minus and ranked the fourth-most diverse middle school in Illinois. Rock Island High, called “Rocky” by locals, is also graded a B-minus and ranked the state’s 13th-most diverse high school, which Brooks found to be a valuable part of his educational journey. “I’m a believer in real-world experiences,'' he says. "You’d be hard-pressed to find a better experience than a high school where students speak 40-plus languages.”Comfort food at JJ's and Pee Wees
Longview doesn’t have many businesses other than a Family Dollar on 11th Street. However, a Hy-Vee grocery store is less than 2 miles down the road. Some local restaurants are also just a few blocks away, such as Big JJ Fish and Chicken, known simply as JJ’s. Those in the mood for some soul food head to Pee Wee's Restaurant. Downtown is also nearby, with a wider selection of local shops and restaurants.MetroLink buses to downtown Rock Island
Quad Cities MetroLink bus stops are along the neighborhood’s surrounding main roads, including 11th Street, 17th Street, 7th Avenue and 18th Avenue. 17th Street runs less than a mile north to downtown Rock Island and the Centennial Bridge, which crosses the Mississippi River to Davenport. Illinois Route 92 is the closest highway, running east and west through downtown. It’s about a 5-mile drive to Interstate 74 and 7 miles to Quad Cities International Airport, which offers flights to 10 U.S. cities, including Denver, Orlando and Phoenix.
