Saukie is a quiet, leafy neighborhood in Rock Island

As is the case with much of Rock Island, Illinois, the Rock River holds the key to understanding the city's Saukie neighborhood. It has shaped the hilly, tree-covered terrain here, and it is likely what first drew the Sauk People to this area. Long before the arrival of Europeans, the Sauk lived in abundance in and around what is now Rock Island, and their legacy is memorialized at Black Hawk State Historic Site nearby. Today, the river provides Saukie with the perfect backdrop for restaurants, shops and idyllic riverside views.

Most homes range from $100,000 to $300,000

Home styles in Saukie vary depending on the region of the neighborhood you live in. On the west side, the neighborhood mainly consists of single-story ranches, with a collection of cape cods and bungalows available, as well. On the east side, federal colonial and McMansion style homes are more common. Regardless of where you choose to live in Saukie, the average home sells for between $100,000 and $300,000.

Zoning for Rock Island-Milan School District

Students in Saukie benefit from some of Rock Island’s best public schools. For elementary education, Eugene Field Elementary receives some of the highest public school ratings in the area and is recognized in the state for its ability to help students to exceed expectations. Later, middle school students attend Washington Junior High School, while Rock Island High School serves students towards the end of their standard education career.

Outdoor recreation in the Quad Cities

For outdoor recreation, Saukie Golf Course is a favorite of golfers all over the Quad Cities. Well maintained fairways, majestic oak trees and challenging par threes characterize this nearly 100-year-old course in the heart of Saukie. Over at Rock Island Sophomore Field, locals can engage in a friendly game of baseball within minutes of homes on the neighborhood northwest side. Alternatively, Hodge Park offers a greater variety of recreational amenities with tennis courts for sparring with a friend, a playground for children to explore and charcoal grills to turn a regular day trip at the park into your own personal cookout.

Local retail and restaurant options on Blackhawk Road

As you make your way down 38th Street, Blackhawk Road is a neighborhood hub of opportunities for dining out along the river. Arthur’s Garden Delicatessen has an authentic deli feel and features subs, pastas and salads. Riverfront Grille offers a highly rated spot complete with options for breakfast, lunch and dinner in an indoor/outdoor setting with a riverfront patio. Just down the street, Pizza & Subs is a popular Italian spot known for its unique collection of calzones and top-notch service.

Just a few minutes east along Blackhawk Road, locals can shop at the nearest Dollar General for a variety of dirt cheap goods, check out Goodwill for a convenient favorite sweater or purchase a new car battery at Interstate All Battery Center. The shopping center also offers a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ residents at the Clock, Inc. Community Center.
