Community and growth in southeast Rockford
Community is vital in this southeast Rockford neighborhood that runs along Bildahl and Lapey Streets, two parallel roads in a primarily residential community that neighbors a sizable industrial sector of the city with warehouses, vehicle junkyards and manufacturing centers. The area recently welcomed Rock Church’s Reed Street campus, and with it brought Project 1013: a historically successful cleanup initiative hailing from Rockford’s West Side. The week of yardwork and home maintenance added curb appeal to homes that neighbors have lived in for decades, free of charge. Around the bend of Ken-Rock Park is Brooke Road United Methodist Church, which visitors can spot thanks to the little free pantry out front. A thriving community center and family resource campaign are the latest developments at this local anchor, which recently celebrated its 100th year in the community. Though commerce is sparse in southeast Rockford and essential resources may be harder to secure, Bildahl-Lapey continues to grow through the efforts of its residents.

No-fuss homes with uniform lots and plenty of parking space
Uniform lots line the grid surrounding Bildahl Street and Lapey Street all the way up to Harrison Avenue at the northern boundary of the neighborhood. Some homes are within eyeshot of the Brook Church community center or Ken-Rock Park. Brick or aluminum-sided Cape Cods, with or without upstairs dormer windows, are common, along with Minimal Traditional homes and bungalows with sunrooms or simple porticos sheltering the front door. Front yards, many of them filled with busy gardens or kids’ toys, are framed by chain-link fences. A drainage easement traces through the neighborhood to prevent flooding from the Rock River, and some homes may be at greater risk of damage during heavy rains and storm surges, according to risk data analysis firm First Street. Depending on how many renovations are needed before a home is move-in ready, newcomers pay between $50,000 and $130,000.

A hub for connection and important resources on Brook Road
Brooke Road United Methodist Church acts as a hub for essential resources and social enrichment in the community. In May 2024, they held a grand opening for their Community Healing Resource Center, one of 11 throughout Illinois offering trauma-informed therapy. The new initiative works alongside the Brooke Road Community Center, which uses empty Sunday School classrooms throughout the year with programs like Zumba exercise classes, an open computer lab and Girl Scouts. Several of the programs are held in Spanish, and it's not uncommon to see literacy-based programs at the center or at nearby businesses like A-1 Dry Cleaners. Representatives from Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors work from the center to help residents procure essential documents like driver's licenses and registrations for school and child care.
