CMC's close-knit community on Rockford's outskirts
On the southern outskirts of Rockford and surrounded by cornfields, CMC is a pocket of suburbia. This neighborhood is actually a collection of four different homeowners associations that all come together under one organization to form CMC—Canyon Ridge, Maywood Manor, Cheyenne Heights and Twin Ridge. “The purpose of the association is to promote pride and unity among our neighbors,” says CMC treasurer and resident Sally Johnson. “We do this by organizing neighborhood events and combatting community deterioration.” While some of the associations might have different aesthetics and architectural styles, the culture of this community is seamless, with everyone united under CMC.
Diverse architecture styles throughout CMC
Ranches and split-levels are common across CMC, sitting along streets lined with trees, though the brush and young trees tend to hug the road more in Maywood Manor. The northern side of the neighborhood features New Traditional homes built in the early 2000s, while Twin Ridge along the southern side offers more Tudor Revival-styled homes. Across CMC, houses sell between $150,000 and $300,000, though there’s also the optional fees for members of CMC. “We have yearly dues that are collected once a year for those who wish to participate,” Johnson says. “The dues finance several events during the year and pay for a streetlight at the end of Golden Prairie Avenue.”
Ranch style homes with loads of detail and charm are what make CMC a nice place to live.

Driving to downtown Rockford from CMC
Because CMC is on the farther side of the city from downtown, the community isn’t served by public transportation, making this a more car-dependent neighborhood. Downtown Rockford is about 6.5 miles away, accessible via Kishwaukee Street. Up by downtown, UW Health Swedish American Hospital is just over 5 miles away. While CMC feels farther from downtown, it is closer to the city’s airport that most Rockford suburbs—Chicago Rockford International Airport is just over 3 miles away. However, the proximity means residents may be more aware of the jets coming and going.
Hiking and mountain biking destinations around CMC
CMC doesn’t have any neighborhood parks, but the southern outskirts’ more rural feel means that there are plenty of hiking opportunities nearby. Kishwaukee Gorge Forest Preserve offers hiking trails through the woods with outlooks over the gorge. The trail is only 3 miles long, but the steep steps make it more intense, though the scenery is worth it. Seth B. Atwood Park’s 334 acres started out as World War I training grounds, but today boast 20 miles of multi-use trails. The grounds even include biking washing and repair areas for mountain bikers.

Most of the dining scene down by CMC are fast food restaurants, like Starbucks and Burger King, so residents may have to drive a couple of miles for a night out. John’s Restaurant and Pizzeria is a family-owned Italian restaurant on this side of town, which has served the Rockford community for over 40 years. While it offers standard Italian food, it also offers stuffed pizzas, where two doughs are baked together with fillings between them and pizza toppings on the top. Up by Alpine Park, Alpine View has a classic diner feel with vinyl booths, and serves classic breakfast and dinner favorites. In the fall, the pumpkin pancakes draw people in for breakfast. CMC hosts regular community events throughout the year, advertised on the community’s Facebook group, to bring residents together. Whether it’s a community-wide garage sale or holiday lights competition in the winter, events create a sense of togetherness within CMC, regardless of what individual homeowners association residents are part of. Residents can also drive downtown to take part of the city’s events, like the Fourth of July festivities, where residents can watch three parades and a 30-minute fireworks show synced to music.
