About 4 miles north of downtown Rockford

Halsted Road is an east-west road that runs through the middle of the Halsted Road neighborhood, about 4 miles north of downtown Rockford. There’s a diverse mix of people who call this neighborhood home. “It’s a perfect first-time homebuyers’ neighborhood. If people are in that category, I steer them in this direction,” says Dana Bonnell-Campbell, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Crosby Starke Real Estate and a lifelong Rockford resident. “At the same time, there are people who have lived here their whole life.

Modestly built houses in the Halsted Road neighborhood

There’s an older stock of homes in the Halsted Road neighborhood with between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet of space and two to three bedrooms. The era is from the 1940s to the ‘60s, and the styles are primarily ranch, with some Cape Cods peppered periodically. A few homes are on quarter-acre lots, and the price range is between $100,000 and $200,000. “Any home under $100,000 most likely will need work,” Bonnell-Campbell says. As of the summer of 2024, the Rockford market is experiencing a low inventory of homes. When a house goes on the market in this neighborhood, it’s usually sold in just a few days if priced correctly.

Eating options along Main Street

The Swedish Pancake House is located in the North Towne Shopping Center and opens at 6 every morning. In addition to serving breakfast favorites, there’s an in-house bakery. Swedish-style pancakes are different in that they’re sweet, buttery, thin and often topped with cream or jam. An old-school donut shop vibe happens at Doughboys Donuts, with a display case full of freshly made treats. The crust is thin, and the slices are cut into squares at Anna’s Pizza. They also have other Italian options on the menu, like spaghetti and lasagna. Walmart Supercenter and ALDI are the grocery options, about a 5-minute drive to the west on Riverside Boulevard, while going a bit to the east near Main Street is a Dollar General for quick essentials.
