Hillview
Suburban Neighborhood in Rockford, Illinois
Winnebago County 61108
Heading to The Victory Tap or Aldi
Hillview is primarily a residential enclave, with dining and shopping options at least 1 mile away in any direction. Folks head south on Ohio Parkway and west over the train tracks to reach their local Aldi supermarket or The Victory Tap for hot wings and cold beer. Surrounded by industrial buildings and blue-collar businesses, the bar is a true watering hole for southeast side residents. The closest true commercial strip—Broadway—leads to an intersection historically known as “Five Points” for its oddly-shaped crossover between three busy streets. Restaurants like Mexico Clasico and reliable services like RNR Tire Express make this area an important and reignited commercial sector for surrounding communities.Homes from 20th Street to Ohio Parkway
Homes sit in a single file line down roads branching off from curvy Wesleyan Avenue and are often twofold: the main home with its decked-out portico and neat landscaping, and a detached garage or shed pushed back into the lot. “It’s got a real cute blend of ranches and Cape Cods, and even though they were built in the early ‘70s they still hold up nicely,” Humpal says. Heritage Court and Pilgrim Court are on the farthest west side, with slightly curved lots and sidewalks rounding the bend. About half a mile from Wesleyan the lots become larger, with more tree cover and space for a pool or deck. The southmost area is built up with low-rise apartment buildings and ranch-style brick-and-vinyl duplexes on dead-end streets. Homes throughout the community range in price from about $100,000 to $170,000. With about 900 residents in the community, the area is evenly split between renters and owners.Rockford Public Schools and private options near Hillview
Kids in the community can start at one of their local Rockford Public Schools. Some kids can see the doors of Whitehead Elementary School, which scores a C-minus from Niche, from their front porch. Abraham Lincoln Middle School is closer to downtown, scoring a C-minus, and Rockford East High School gets a C-plus. Both schools are the Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI) hubs for the district. The program aims to help students who are newcomers to the United States adjust to the new school environment and culture with language and family support both in English and their native languages. Kids in Hillview may also opt for tuition-based private schools, most of which are on the east side of town. Rockford Christian School serves prekindergarten through 12th grade and scores an A-minus.Heading to new-and-improved Harmon Park
Though a few miles from Rockford's popular riverfront parks, Hillview residents have options in their corner of the city. Athletes can practice at a combined baseball and soccer field at 25th Street Park. A trench drain collects water from this neatly trimmed area, keeping flooding at bay. At the center of Rolling Green is D-shaped Harmon Park, which recently got a major facelift thanks to a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. New playground and fitness equipment reflect the glow from the paved perimeter walkway at night.Seasonal events in Rockford
Like the rest of the city, Hillview residents make their way to downtown Rockford for seasonal events. “One that happens on Black Friday is the tree-lighting ceremony,” says Sully Cadengo, Realtor with Stateline Real Estate who has sold homes all over Rockford. “It’s one of the biggest events we’ve ever had, we do a mini–Macy’s Day Parade with floats, vendors, and horses. It’s like a big Christmas fair, and people from all over come.” In the summer, residents head up to Shoreline Park to watch the Ski Broncs, a performing arts team whose stage is right on the water.Getting around from Hillview to the rest of Rockford
Hillview is about 3 miles southeast of downtown Rockford and the River District. “It's also one of the closest neighborhoods to the Interstate, which is nice,” Humpal says. “I-90 is the first one you hit when you’re heading north to Wisconsin or east to Chicago.” Those traveling to the Windy City have an 85-mile drive in store, but trains may be an option in the next few years with the arrival of a new Rockford Metra stop scheduled to open in 2027. Rockford Mass Transit District (RMTD) buses also line Wesleyan Avenue and Ohio Parkway. “You can throw your bike in it if you want to and they step up and offer free transportation for events in Rockford so everyone can make it,” Humpal says. “This is still a town where if you get a flat tire someone will pull over and help you. We are a big small town. We have everything, and if you feel you don’t have it, you can get to Chicago in an hour. It still has that Midwest feel, we’re surrounded by cornfields and friendly neighbors.”
