A hideaway neighborhood by the Rock River

A small group of houses is wedged between the Sinnissippi Park and Golf Course and the Anderson Japanese Gardens in a neighborhood called Jacoby Heights, all while The Rock River flows west. The homes are spacious and are on large lots. “Rick Nielsen has a home in this neighborhood,” says Ernie Hunter, who owns Ernie Hunter Realty, talking about the guitarist and lead songwriter of Rockford’s Cheap Trick, who rose to fame in the 1970s and ‘80s. “He used to live in a historic house in the neighborhood but now lives in another one near Keith Country Day School.”

Historic home on Jacoby Place

The homes on the west side of Jacoby Place are on large lots. Nielsen used to live in a historic house on about 2 acres of land. The 1865 Italian Villa is recognized as a historic landmark in Rockford and was Nielsen’s home until he sold it in 1988. The homes closer to the river cost $600,000 to $900,000. “The homes on the east side of Jacoby Place are less expensive,” Hunter says. Those range from $200,000 to $550,000. Home styles are Colonial Revival, Georgian Colonials, Tudor and ranch-style from the early to mid-20th century. Large lots range from a third of an acre to 2 acres.
Houses close to the river include large estates and are priced between $600,000 and $900,000.

Jacoby Heights is surrounded by nature

To the south of the neighborhood is Sinnissippi Park, which contains the park’s music shell, the site for summer concerts on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The Rockford Convention and Visitors Bureau has a Cheap Trick Fan Trail, highlighting areas around the city the band frequented. The music shell is one of those stops. The band played at the Music Shell in 1969 and then again in 1975. During Christmas, the park is lit up for the Festival of Lights, which starts in late November. Connected to the park is the Sinnissippi Golf Course, the oldest in the Rockford Park District, featuring nine challenging holes. Across 2nd Street, along the river, is the Sinnissippi Gardens, with dozens of varieties of rose plants. To the south is Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens, a tropical-themed botanical garden. To the north of the neighborhood is Anderson Japanese Gardens. This project started when owner John Anderson visited a similar garden in Oregon and wanted to start something in his backyard. Today, it’s a public venue spread over 12 acres. “One of my favorite things to do is walk on the Rock River Recreation Path,” Hunter says, who lives in the area. It’s a paved path that follows the Rock River and leads south into downtown Rockford.

Enjoy a meal while admiring the view of the gardens through the large windows. Across the river, about 2 miles east, is The Norwegian on Main Street, which provides a relaxed atmosphere and serves breakfast and lunch. There are meaty and plant-based options on the menu. The restaurant is open during the evening, Thursday through Saturday, for live music performances.
