There’s a strong sense of community in the Keith Creek neighborhood southeast of downtown Rockford with a very active neighborhood association. “It’s very much a sense of neighbor helping neighbor,” says Keith Creek Neighborhood Association president Dennis Fermenich. “I try to greet every new resident and welcome them to the neighborhood and do whatever I can to help everybody here.” The association also has monthly meetings and an active Facebook page. Getting information out is critical as the neighborhood faces challenges from its namesake waterway.

Keith Creek flooding
The Keith Creek flows in an open area in the neighborhood’s northern section near Churchhill Park. About 20 years ago, houses up close to the creek were demolished because of the frequent flooding from the creek. It’s still an issue today, and the City of Rockford is working on a Stormwater Master Plan that, as of the summer of 2024, is still being developed. Businesses in a shopping center at the corner of 18th and Charles had to relocate because of the frequent flooding during heavy rains. “The best thing we can do is tell people to make sure storm drains in the neighborhood remain unclogged. Even lawn debris can stop it up,” Fermenich says.
Keith Creek offers a running water feature throughout the neighborhood.

Keeping homes in Keith Creek authentic-looking
It’s an established neighborhood with the most recent houses from the 1940s and ‘50s. Craftsman, Cape Cod and bungalows from the early part of the 20th century are priced from $80,000 to $150,000, with condos built in the same era ranging from $50,000 to $100,000. “If there are any renovations to the houses in this neighborhood, the antique look is always there,” Fermenich says. If homes go up for sale, they usually are on the market for an average of 26 days.
The neighborhood is given a CAP crime score level of 4, which is at the national average. “Some homes in the neighborhood have installed motion sensor lighting, which deters people from walking through yards,” he says. “I encourage people to report anything suspicious to police.”

Gulotta’s is family-owned
For nearly 50 years, Gulotta’s has been a family-owned carry-out-only pizza restaurant. Their unique approach to pizza is putting the cheese on top of the ingredients. The restaurant even produces its own Mama Gulotta’s pasta sauce, sold in some Rockford grocery stores and the Woodman’s store in Beloit, Wisconsin, about 20 miles north. Record and book collectors will enjoy Toad Hall Records and Books, which has an extensive collection of vinyl, CDs, and 8-tracks, along with books and comic books. There are even vintage stereo systems and cassette decks for sale. Schnucks is on the north side of Charles Street for groceries.
