‘Neighbor helping neighbor’ in Keith Creek
There’s a strong sense of community in the Keith Creek neighborhood southeast of downtown Rockford with a very active neighborhood association. “It’s very much a sense of neighbor helping neighbor,” says Keith Creek Neighborhood Association president Dennis Fermenich. “I try to greet every new resident and welcome them to the neighborhood and do whatever I can to help everybody here.” The association also has monthly meetings and an active Facebook page. Getting information out is critical as the neighborhood faces challenges from its namesake waterway.
Keith Creek flooding
The Keith Creek flows in an open area in the neighborhood’s northern section near Churchhill Park. About 20 years ago, houses up close to the creek were demolished because of the frequent flooding from the creek. It’s still an issue today, and the City of Rockford is working on a Stormwater Master Plan that, as of the summer of 2024, is still being developed. Businesses in a shopping center at the corner of 18th and Charles had to relocate because of the frequent flooding during heavy rains. “The best thing we can do is tell people to make sure storm drains in the neighborhood remain unclogged. Even lawn debris can stop it up,” Fermenich says.
Keith Creek offers a running water feature throughout the neighborhood.
